  • Cosmography as Cultural Capital

    Open Access•Árpád Kovács•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2021

Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital can be used to show that the cosmography of the learned bishop Isidore of Seville (560-636) was intended to acculturate the Visigothic elite to the Roman worldview, shedding new light on the relations of these two ruling elites. By being the provider and guardian of the culture, the Hispano-Roman aristocracy retained significant power and exercised its influence through the Catholic Church. Three dialectical…

The examinations were focusing on defining structural constituents, determining their distribution and grain size. Inclusions were also investigated. On the basis of the result traces and characteristics of different technological methods of forging could have been det…

This work presents a complex metallographic examination of bronze, silver and golden artefacts from early medieval German (Gepid) cemeteries of the Hungarian Plain, focusing on the finds from Tiszapüspöki.A newly developed non-destructive X-ray diffraction method was applied on the artefacts for the first time, as a novel approach, for sampling-free residual stress measurements. Other techniques such as optical microscopy and scanning electron mi…

  • « L’infinité en petitesse » Pascal et Dostoïevski

    Árpád Kovács•ARTICLE•Studia Slavica Academiae…•2016

Dostoevsky was familiar with the oeuvre of Blaise Pascal. It is provable that he read the book Pensées . One of the central concepts of this book (“les extrémités se touchent”) is cited in the novel The Idiot . In my essay, I make an attempt to reconstruct the original context of the citation. I sketch two possible interpretative practices of the cited anthropological concept: the cognitive and the heuristic one (“le coeur a son ordre, l’esprit a…

Social and Structural Changes in Hungarian Talent Care: The case of a sports club Sociology of sport lacks information on the proper demographic description of athletes who are selected into a national sport talent care program. Therefore, the current study attempted to fill the gap in this area. Research from abroad has demonstrated that whilst sport appears to be a democratic social environment, the initial opportunities are not exactly equal. …
