Wine and the War at Sea
This article examines the escorted convoy of ships that brought wine from Bordeaux to England in 1372–1373. By offering advantageous terms of service to shipowners willing to provide large ships refitted and manned for war, the crown was able to deploy a powerful, armed flotilla, which, beyond escort duty, could seize opportunities for enrichment at sea, thereby recouping some of the expense of mobilization. The article focuses on ten well-docume…
The military careerist in fourteenth-century England
This article seeks to explain how it was that the careerist soldier became so prominent and ubiquitous a feature of the English military scene during the second half of the fourteenth century. Beginning with a characterisation of the military careerist in his various guises, the discussion proceeds with an investigation of how the pool of militarily employed manpower and the wider recruitment context changed during the fourteenth century owing to…

Warfare in Medieval Brabant, 1356–1406, by Sergio Boffa (Woodbridge: Boydell P., 2004; pp. xx + 292. £50). There is much more to this impressive monograph than its title suggests. In addition to the course and character of warfare, public and private, that involved Brabançons in the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, Sergio Boffa examines the personnel of Brabant's armies and all aspects of military organisation within the duchy. The resul…

Ecclesiastical Wealth in England in 1086
England was a rich prize for William the Conqueror to have won at the battle of Hastings. His conquest was followed by a major redistribution of the wealth of his new kingdom. By the end of his reign, a tenurial revolution had swept through the lay landholding community, leaving only a handful of Anglo-Saxons as tenants-in-chief. The Church had undergone considerable changes of personnel; only one bishopric was still in English hands (Worcester),…
