This study investigated the relationship between policies related to the recruitment, selection, preparation, and certification of new teachers and (a) the quality of future teachers as measured by their mathematics content and pedagogy content knowledge and (b) student achievement in mathematics at the national level. The study used data collected for the Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics, which compared the ways in which 17…
Supervisor selection or allocation and continuity of supervision
This article reports part of an Australian longitudinal study which examined the patterns evident in the relationships Ph.D. students and supervisors developed and the ways they worked together. The participants were 21 Ph.D. students and their main supervisors. Data were collected via interviews conducted between 1995 and 1998. Three interviews were conducted separately for each student and supervisor. This report focuses on the allocation of su…

Of particular interest was that nonpracticing smokers (quitters) scored more internal than either smokers or nonsmokers

The Reliability of Observational Measures
Researchers in the area of classroom observation have been greatly troubled by questions concerning the reliability of the measures that they obtain. Until recently, this concern was frequently assuaged by the routine computation of one or more coefficients of observer agreement (see Frick & Semmel, 1974). However, the work of Medley and Mitzel (1963) and McGaw, Wardrop and Bunda (1972) has clearly established the inadequacy of observer agreement…
