Reevaluating William Ward’s (1769–1823) Early Radicalism
William Ward (1769–1823) is best known as a Baptist missionary who printed the Bible into multiple Indian languages alongside the pioneering BMS missionary William Carey (1761–1834). In recent years, several researchers have fixated upon Ward’s early sociopolitical radicalism and reform. The most extreme event attributed to Ward’s radicalism has been the John Thelwall riot in Derby at the Particular Baptist chapel in 1797. This paper argues that …
Investigating the impact of structural racism explanations for discriminatory behavior on judgments of the perpetrator
Structural racism has become a household term used in the media and in everyday conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Despite increased discussion of structural racism, people often struggle to understand how structural racism is perpetuated by individuals. We integrate research on moral psychology, social cognition, and intergroup relations to investigate whether structural explanations can lead to reduced perception…

If humans design the planet
As efforts to control climate change gain momentum, so too does the possibility that some global actor(s) will deploy one or more forms of climate engineering. Climate engineering refers to large-scale and deliberate activities intended to change either the carbon-balance or energy-balance of the planet. Climate engineering approaches are untested, involve deep uncertainty, and have far-reaching consequences. Nevertheless, many scientists expect …
The social costs of forgiving following multiple-victim transgressions
A single transgressor sometimes harms more than just 1 victim. We examine a previously undocumented social cost of forgiving following these multiple-victim transgressions. We find that nonforgiving victims believe that other victims who forgive the common transgressor make their decisions to withhold forgiveness appear ungenerous. Faced with this threat, nonforgiving victims report that other forgiving (vs. nonforgiving) victims have overclaimed…
Impediments to forgiveness
We investigate the possibility that victims and transgressors are predictably miscalibrated in their interpretation of a transgression, and that this has important implications for the process of forgiveness. Across 5 studies, we find that victims underestimate how much transgressors desire forgiveness. This is driven by a 2-part mediating mechanism: First, victims are more likely than transgressors to see the transgression as intentional, and se…
Punishing the Perpetrator Decreases Compensation for Victims
Why do victims sometimes not receive the help they need? One reason may be that people believe punishing perpetrators restores justice, which makes them less willing to help victims if the perpetrator has been punished. Participants who were first asked how much to punish a perpetrator subsequently recommended less compensation for the victim relative to participants who were asked about compensation first. In contrast, participants punished perp…
