Marginalia as narratives of ordinary lives
This article examines Canadian author Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall’s 2004 memoir Down to This: Squalor and Splendour in a Big-City Shantytown through the notions of marginalia and the ordinary in order to question dichotomic representations of homelessness. Scholars such as Kathleen Stewart and Lauren Berlant have pointed out that neoliberalism stresses the social benefits of individual precariousness for the sake of profit and fosters a sense of personal crisis. Narratives of Disposability in Contemporary British Fiction
The purpose of this article is to analyse Monica Ali's In the Kitchen (2009) and John Lanchester's Capital (2012). I draw on the notion of disposability (Evans and Giroux, Standing, and Bauman) to delve into the concepts of neoliberal subjectivity and exclusion for the analysis of the characters that in the novels embody subjectivities shaped by the logic of finance (economic migrants or asylum seekers).
