On Aristotle’s use of examples and how to read them
The purpose of this paper is twofold. One is to show that Aristotle’s study of examples in Prior Analytics (An. Pr.) and Rhetoric (Rh.) (and in particular the ‘comparison’ (parabole) described in Rh 2.20) is useful for philosophy and, moreover, it underlies Aristotle’s discussion of examples in several passages of his philosophical writings. The second is to show that in order to correctly understand the examples that Aristotle presents in his ph…
Starting with Practical Reason in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics VI 1
This article is about the object of the calculative part of the rational soul, as it is characterized in Nicomachean Ethics VI 1. Lines 1139a6–8 are usually read as claiming that the calculative part deals with the contingent. I argue for another reading of these crucial lines, according to which the calculative part deals more specifically with actions and decisions, which are things whose principles can be otherwise. The difficulty of these lin…
A Method of Resolutions
This article is about the methodological remarks in Nicomachean Ethics 7.1, 1145b2–7, and the way they are carried out in the following chapters. I argue that the procedure therein described does not aim to establish consistency among a subset of endoxa , but to test and refine—by considering and resolving objections against them— endoxa that could enter into a nominal definition of continence and incontinence. The dialectical lineage of this dis…
Going Through Aporiai
This paper challenges a widespread reading of Aristotle’s use of dialectic in the treatment of aporiai . According to this reading, the search for a resolution of an aporia is supposed to proceed by arguing against conflicting theses to refute one of them. I argue that this reading is not satisfactory and propose an alternative, based on an often overlooked distinction between two dialectical procedures, the refutation ( elenchos ) of a thesis an…
