Extracting big data from the internet to support the development of a new patient-reported outcome measure for breast implant illness
Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Gender-Affirming Surgery
Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are questionnaires that assess how patients feel and function. PROMs should be developed and validated using a mixed methods, multistep approach with extensive patient input to ensure that they are easy to understand, comprehensive, and relevant. PROMs that are specific to gender-affirming care (including surgery), such as the GENDER-Q, can be used to educate patients, align patients' goals and preference…

Deriving an overall appearance domain score by applying bifactor IRT analysis to the Body-Q appearance scales
We successfully applied a bifactor model to BODY-Q data with good item and model fit indices. With this method, we were able to produce reliable overall appearance scores which may improve the interpretability of the BODY-Q while increasing flexibility
Building the political case for investing in public health and public health research
Governments around the world vastly underinvest in public health, despite ever growing evidence demonstrating its economic and social benefits. Challenges in securing greater public health investment largely stem from the necessity for governments to demonstrate visible impacts within an election cycle, whereas public health initiatives operate over the long term and generally involve prevention, statistical lives and underlying conditions. It is…

The development of scales to measure childhood cancer survivors' readiness for transition to long‐term follow‐up care as adults
PURPOSE: To develop and validate scales to measure constructs that survivors of childhood cancer report as barriers and/or facilitators to the process of transitioning from paediatric to adult-oriented long-term follow-up (LTFU) care. METHODS: Qualitative interviews provided a dataset that were used to develop items for three new scales that measure cancer worry, self-management skills and expectations about adult care. These scales were field-te…
Is the G ive Y outh a V oice questionnaire an appropriate measure of teen‐centred care in paediatric oncology
BACKGROUND: Adolescents have their own views about the cancer care they receive and how they feel they are treated, but their opinions are rarely solicited. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the 56-item Give Youth a Voice (GYV-56), its subscales and its 20-item short-form, are clinically meaningful and psychometrically sound instruments that can be used to measure teen-centred care (TCC) in paediatric oncology. DESIGN: Qualitative interviews and a …
Demands and Rewards of Working Within Multidisciplinary Teams in Pediatric Oncology
Pediatric oncology care in Canada is delivered by multidisciplinary teams consisting of healthcare providers with different areas of expertise. Limited information is available on how the multidisciplinary team influences jobrelated rewards, demands, and stress in pediatric oncology. A qualitative approach was adopted to learn about healthcare providers’ experiences of working within a multidisciplinary team in pediatric oncology. Qualitative int…

Changes Over Time in the Health of Caregivers of Children With Health Problems
Objectives. We used Canadian population-based data to examine changes in the health of caregivers of children with complex health problems compared with caregivers of healthy children over a 10-year time period. Methods. The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth collected data biennially from 9401 children and their caregivers in 6 waves from 1994–1995 to 2004–2005. We conducted growth-curve analyses of these data to model self-repor…
Health Among Caregivers of Children With Health Problems
Objectives. We used population-based data to evaluate whether caring for a child with health problems had implications for caregiver health after we controlled for relevant covariates. Methods. We used data on 9401 children and their caregivers from a population-based Canadian study. We performed analyses to compare 3633 healthy children with 2485 children with health problems. Caregiver health outcomes included chronic conditions, activity limit…

Contrasting evidence of the effectiveness of cosmetic surgery from two health related quality of life measures
Cosmetic surgery is a controversial intervention because it is often regarded as a low priority for public provision. 1It is increasingly argued that decisions about the public provision of medical and surgical procedures should be made in the light of evidence of effectiveness from patient-based outcome measures. However, very diVerent impressions of eVectiveness may be found depending on choice of outcome measure. This short report therefore eval…
