Associations between stand spatial structures and carbon sequestration on natural Larix gmelinii forests in Northeast China
Effects of stand spatial- and nonspatial structure on carbon sequestration were quantified. • Larix forests were characterized with 0.29 mixing, 0.50 dominance and 0.70 competition. • Optimizing mingling, dominance and competition can increase carbon sequestration. Forest structure is a fundamental component of the forest ecosystem and significantly impacts carbon sequestration. Previous studies mainly focused on optimizing forest non-spatial att…
A controlled before-after quasi-experimental study examining the impacts of a supermarket on-shelf nutrition labelling intervention on food sales by type of food processing
New waves, new variants, old inequity
box Bangladesh, a country of 166 million people, continues to be severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first three cases of COVID-19 in Bangladesh were detected on 8 March 2020 among a group of travellers. Since then, the country has experienced two waves—in June 2020 and April 2021. In July 2021, less than 3 months after the second wave, Bangladesh is currently fighting its third and by far the deadliest wave. Like most other countries…
Variations in Processes of Care and Outcomes for Hospitalized General Medicine Patients Treated by Female vs Male Physicians
In this cross-sectional study of patients admitted to general medical units in Canada, patients cared for by female physicians had lower mortality rates than those treated by male physicians, adjusting for patient characteristics. This finding was nonsignificant after adjustment for other physician characteristics
Changes in the dollar value of per capita alcohol, essential, and non-essential retail sales in Canada during Covid-19
During the first 9 months of the pandemic, per capita alcohol sales were moderately elevated in Canada. In contrast, non-essential sales were lower than prior years, driven by large decreases during the initial months of the pandemic. These findings suggest that the pandemic was associated with increased population-level alcohol consumption, which may lead to increased alcohol-related harms. Ongoing research is needed to examine how factors, incl…
