Effect of nutrition education on hemoglobin level of pregnant women in Southeast Ethiopia
The findings showed that a comprehensive nutrition education intervention using the health belief model (HBM) and theory of planned behaviour (TPB) designed to improve dietary diversity substantially improved hemoglobin (Hgb) levels among pregnant women. While we found no single dietary factor to be significant, in this group of pregnant women in Ethiopia, an increase in the daily consumption of a cup of coffee or tea decreased Hgb levels. As a c…
Effect of enhanced nutrition services with community‐based nutrition services on the diet quality of young children in Ethiopia
Poor diet quality related to inadequate complementary feeding is a major public health problem in low and middle-income countries including Ethiopia. Low dietary diversity has been linked to negative health outcomes in children. To provide a package of interventions to close nutritional gaps through agriculture, the Sustainable Undernutrition Reduction in Ethiopia (SURE) programme was set up as a multi-sectoral initiative and the results of combi…
Child-Owned Poultry Intervention Effects on Hemoglobin, Anemia, Concurrent Anemia and Stunting, and Morbidity Status of Young Children in Southern Ethiopia
Cereal-based diets contribute to anemia in Ethiopian children. Eggs have nutrients to boost hemoglobin levels as well as counter concurrent anemia and stunting (CAS) and morbidity status. A community trial, targeting 6-18 months old children, was conducted in Halaba. Two clusters were randomly selected and allocated to intervention (N = 122) and control (N = 121) arms. Intervention group (IG) children received egg-laying hens with caging in a cul…
Association of Dietary Calcium Intake with Dental, Skeletal and Non-Skeletal Fluorosis among Women in the Ethiopian Rift Valley
Fluorosis is a major public health problem in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia. Low calcium (Ca) intake may worsen fluorosis symptoms. We assessed the occurrence of fluorosis symptoms among women living in high-fluoride (F) communities in South Ethiopia and their associations with dietary Ca intake. Women ( n = 270) from two villages provided clinical and questionnaire data. Dental fluorosis examination was done using Dean's Index, and skeletal and no…
Effect of a Child-Owned Poultry Intervention Providing Eggs on Nutrition Status and Motor Skills of Young Children in Southern Ethiopia
Eggs are highly nutritious foods, yet intake by children in Ethiopia is low. We hypothesized that a nutrition-sensitive poultry intervention improves nutritional status of children 6-18 months using a 6-month cluster randomized controlled community trial. Intervention group (IG) children received a gift of two egg-laying hens in a ceremony where children's ownership of the chickens was declared by community leaders. Parents promised to add more h…

A Nutrition Education Intervention to Increase Consumption of Pulses Showed Improved Nutritional Status of Adolescent Girls in Halaba Special District, Southern Ethiopia
This study aimed to determine the effect of a 6-month in-school nutrition education intervention to improve pulse consumption on weight status of adolescent girls in Ethiopia. At the intervention school, 66 girls received bi-monthly lessons that included recipes and tastings. Girls (n = 66) at the control school had usual in-school activities. With pulse-based nutrition education which included discussions and demonstrations, knowledge, attitude …
Dietary Fluoride Intake and Associated Skeletal and Dental Fluorosis in School Age Children in Rural Ethiopian Rift Valley
An observational study was conducted to determine dietary fluoride intake, diet, and prevalence of dental and skeletal fluorosis of school age children in three fluorosis endemic districts of the Ethiopian Rift Valley having similar concentrations of fluoride (F) in drinking water (~5 mg F/L). The duplicate plate method was used to collect foods consumed by children over 24 h from 20 households in each community (n = 60) and the foods, along with…
The effectiveness of nutrition education
Complementary foods (CFs) in Ethiopia are cereal based and adding locally grown pulses (legumes) to CF would provide needed nutrients. To assess the effects of nutrition education (NEd) using Health Belief Model (HBM) in promoting pulses for CF, a 6-month quasi-experimental study was conducted in 160 mother-child pairs. Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) questions were given to mothers at baseline, midline, and endline, along with anthropome…
A Low Pulse Food Intake May Contribute to the Poor Nutritional Status and Low Dietary Intakes of Adolescent Girls in Rural Southern Ethiopia
Poor nutrition in adolescent girls poses critical health risks on future pregnancy and birth outcomes especially in developing countries. Our purpose was to assess nutritional status and dietary intake of rural adolescent girls and determine pulse and food intake patterns associated with poor nutritional status. A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted in a traditional pulse growing region of southern Ethiopia on 188 girls between 15…
Application of the Health Belief Model to Teach Complementary Feeding Messages in Ethiopia
In Ethiopia many women do not practice appropriate complementary feeding (CF). The Health Belief Model (HBM) asserts that change in behavior is determined after consideration of severity, benefit, and barriers to change. This study examined the effectiveness of 3 months of HBM-based education compared to the traditional (didactic) method on CF practices of mothers, with no education as control, using three randomized groups. One hundred sixty-six…
Beverage consumption patterns of Canadian adults aged 19 to 65 years
Objective To investigate the beverage intake patterns of Canadian adults and explore characteristics of participants in different beverage clusters. Design Analyses of nationally representative data with cross-sectional complex stratified design. Setting Canadian Community Health Survey, Cycle 2·2 (2004). Subjects A total of 14 277 participants aged 19–65 years, in whom dietary intake was assessed using a single 24 h recall, were included in the …

Beverage intake patterns of Canadian children and adolescents
Objective Little is known of the beverage intake patterns of Canadian children or of characteristics within these patterns. The objective was to determine beverage intake patterns among Canadian children and compare intakes of fourteen types of beverages, along with intakes of vitamin C and Ca, and sociodemographic factors across clusters. Design Dietary information was collected using one 24 h recall. Sociodemographic data were collected by inte…
Suboptimal Vitamin D Levels in Pregnant Women Despite Supplement Use
Creating Bridges Between Researchers and Long-Term Care Homes to Promote Quality of Life for Residents
Improving the quality of life for long-term care (LTC) residents is of vital importance. Researchers need to involve LTC staff in planning and implementing interventions to maximize the likelihood of success. The purposes of this study were to (a) identify barriers and facilitators of LTC homes' readiness to implement evidence-based interventions, and (b) develop strategies to facilitate their implementation. A mixed methods design was used, prim…
Low wintertime vitamin D levels in a sample of healthy young adults of diverse ancestry living in the Toronto area
We observe that low vitamin D levels are more prevalent in our sample of young healthy adults than previously reported, particularly amongst those of non-European ancestry. Major factors influencing 25(OH)D levels were vitamin D intake and skin pigmentation. These data suggest a need to increase vitamin D intake either through improved fortification and/or supplementation
