Open Access•Nicholas Grubic, Sarah Carsley et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

While socioeconomic inequalities in cardiovascular health are well-documented among older adults, evidence in younger populations is limited. This study assessed income inequalities in cardiovascular health among children and adolescents (6-17 years), young adults (18-39 years), and middle-aged adults (40-64 years) in Canada from 2007 to 2019. This serial cross-sectional study included 25,538 respondents from six biennial cycles of the nationally…

  • The association between positive parent–child interaction and mental health outcomes in children aged 1–11 years in Canada

Open Access•Peter Yassa, Justin Thielman et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2025•References: 27

While it is theorized that positive PCI is predictive of child mental health, this study did not find a consistent association, except for the frequency at which the parent laughs with the child. This suggests that PCI, as measured in CHSCY, is not a strong indicator of child mental health. Yet, as PCI is an important parenting concept, the PCI items in the CHSCY may not adequately capture the intended construct. Future studies should consider as…

  • Inequities in sleep duration and quality among adolescents in Canada

Open Access•Jessica Mitchell, Megan J Magier et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Differences in sleep duration and quality were most profound among adolescents from the lowest and highest SES. Racial disparities were more evident on weekdays. Compensatory weekend sleep appears more pronounced in females than males. Addressing sleep inequities is critical, as a robust predictor of multiple health outcomes

  • Sleep duration change among adolescents in Canada

    Open Access•Markus J Duncan, Jessica Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2023

Increases in sleep duration may be one of the few benefits to adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic but were not equally distributed across sub-populations. Efforts to promote better sleep adherence may need to account for sex/gender differences, especially in less urbanized areas and certain racial/ethnic groups

  • Early (years) reactions

Open Access•Joanne Kearon, Sarah Carsley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

This analysis gives insight into initial government reactions to support children and families, and opportunities for governments to implement further supportive programs and policies during the current pandemic and future emergencies

  • How can we support best practice? A situational assessment of injury prevention practice in public health

The results of this study suggest that there are several system level needs to support best practice in public health injury prevention in Ontario including reducing research to practice gaps and supporting opportunities for collaboration. Our research contributes to the literature of the complexity of public health practice, and presents several mechanisms of support to increase capacity at a system level to improve injury prevention practice, a…
