Peirce's Idea of Science
Empiricism Expanded
Peirce’s empiricism was not limited to the pragmatic maxim. Eventually, he conceived of philosophy as a set of empirical inquiries, metaphysical and normative. To support that idea, he had to show that we can observe more than it is usually assumed that we can observe. His long series of experimental studies of observation established the objectivity of what would otherwise be thought subjective. He showed that experience itself can be observed a…
Questions Concerning Certain Claims Made for the ‘New List’
Peirce’s early essay ‘On a New List of Categories’ has been claimed to be essential reading for those who would understand his philosophy, even that it is the ‘keystone’ of his ‘system’. I argue that the essay is critical to the evolution of his thought but that reading it is not essential to understanding his other writings; in fact, his later writings contradict it. Peirce’s own claim that this essay contains his ‘one contribution to philosophy…

The Pragmatic Turn by Richard J. Bernstein
Reviewed by: The Pragmatic Turn by Richard J. Bernstein T.L. Short Richard J. Bernstein. The Pragmatic Turn. Cambridge, UK: Polity Press, 2010, xi + 263pp. Over many decades, Richard Bernstein has interpreted contemporary philosophy’s three traditions, roughly distinguished as analytic, pragmatic, and Continental, emphasizing their mutual affinities. Despite this reference to the continent of Europe, it would be wrong to identify any of these tra…
Normative Science
Richard Robin said that Peirce's idea of a normative science grew out of his study of the norms that govern scientific inquiry. This paper develops the suggested dialectic of norms of science and science of norms and examines the role that Peirce claimed observation plays in normative judgment. Peirce's doctrine is compared to recent attacks on the fact/value dichotomy. Putnam's view that there can be objectivity without metaphysics is disputed: …
Did Peirce Have a Cosmology
Peirce had no cosmology. What he had was a scientific program that he never got very far with and eventually dropped. That program was to explain the laws of nature as having evolved from chaos, so as to be able to predict forms of laws remaining to be discovered. The hypotheses proposed, and twice or thrice modified, were never brought to the point of being able to ground such predictions and therefore they remained untestable. The reason the pr…
The Role of NGOs in the Ottawa Process to Ban Landmines
The Ottawa Process, which brought about the Convention banning anti-personnel landmines, is examined. The article looks specifically at the role of NGOs in the negotiations. A brief description of the origins of the Ottawa Process is provided. Six issues regarding the nature and status of NGOs involved and the roles they played in the negotiations are then considered. Finally, conclusions are drawn regarding the circumstances under which NGOs mig…
