Josiah Royce: A Neglected Figure and a Valuable Resource in Mining the Pragmatism/Phenomenology Interactions for Current Philosophical Inquiry
In asking to what extent the interaction between pragmatism and phenomenology offers a valuable resource for re-imaging the limits and potentialities of philosophical inquiry, one needs to acknowledge, first, that pragmatist philosophers, beginning with Josiah Royce, actively contributed to the re-elaboration of the issues and strategies of phenomenology in the American context. Secondly, it will be argued that the philosophies of the classical p…
Josiah Royce and C.I. Lewis: Teacher and Student with Many Shared Affinities
This paper explores lines of influence between Josiah Royce and his student, C.I. Lewis. Lewis himself acknowledged affinities between his conceptual pragmatism and Royce's absolute pragmatism. Royce directly influences Lewis in his pursuit of logical issues and both advocated forms of modal logic. Both Lewis and Royce thought metaphysical issues important and they share affinities with process philosophy. Royce argued that ethics was first philo…
Do Not Block Inquiry: Philosophy in America—Peirce and Socrates
This paper joins Carlin Romano in challenging philosophers in America for their narrow focus while urging that the signs of openness and inclusiveness continue. It explores Romano’s idea of “America” as an agora for debate, argument, and the search for truth, but seeks the models for philosophical practices not so much in Rorty and Isocrates but in William James and the Socratic model. A central question for contemporary philosophical and agora d…
Classical American pragmatism: Practicing philosophy as experiencing life
I argue that Classical American Pragmatists—Royce, James, Dewey, Perice, Addams, Du Bois, and Locke subscribed to this view and practiced philosophy by focusing on experience and directing a critical eye to major problems in living. Thus Royce and Dewey explored the nature of genuine community and its role in developing a flourishing individual life but also a public, democratic life. Royce and James engaged in a phenomenological analysis of huma…
Josiah Royce, a Source of New Insight for Religion Today
Josiah Royce wrote three major works dealing with religion, The Religious Aspects of Philosophy, The Sources of Religious Insight and The Problem of Christianity . In these are insights which I believe need to be recalled today in order to achieve a fresher vision of the nature of religion and more particularly of the nature of Christianity. Moreover, Royce treats various aspects of individual and communal development which I believe are of some …
