Contract or Treaty? The Daʿʿan Agreement of 1911 and the limits on Imam Yahya’s authority
A seminal flashpoint in the scholarly discussion of the post-1872 relationship between the Ottoman empire and its province of Yemen is the Daʿʿan Agreement of 1911. Previous scholarship studying this agreement and its historical context insists that the Ottoman government conceded administrative authority to Imām Yaḥyā Ḥamīd al-Dīn bordering on independence across a vast portion of the Province of Yemen. This study asserts otherwise. The devoluti…
Avner Wishnitzer. Reading Clocks, Alla Turca
The transformation of Ottoman temporal culture has long been interpreted as a consequence of top-down reform within the contexts of Ottoman Westernization and modernization. While this approach to the subject highlights an important aspect of a prolonged process that brought about a major conversion, it falls short in situating that change in a more coherent context of temporal dimensions of social and personal life and religiosity. Avner Wishnit…

The Sufi Journey of Baba Rexheb * By Frances Trix
Many scholars describe Albania as a land that has hosted large numbers of laramanë (dappled) people. Torn between old and new faiths, the Albanians spawned hybrid forms of worship. Perhaps no belief system better epitomized the indigenous Albanian spirit than Bektashizmi. Bektashizmi is the name Albanian disciples of the thirteenth-century Khorasani mystic philosopher Hacı Bektaş Veli gave to their ‘Way’. This heterodox Sufi sect originally enjoy…
Sarah D. Shields. Fezzes in the River
Diplomatic history, once considered the pinnacle of historical studies, has long been brushed aside and characterized as an insignificant field that deals only with elites. Indeed, detailed diplomatic reports and correspondence rarely provide insight into the lives of average individuals. But while A. J. P. Taylor-style diplomatic history has very little chance of revival, new approaches advocating a marriage between the Primat der Innenpolitik s…
Civil-Military Relations in the Second Constitutional Period, 1908–1918
The Young Turk Revolution of 1908 set in motion radical transformations in many fields, including that of civil-military relations. Whereas in the wake of the revolution the military establishment aspired to reassert its role as a power-broker, the para-military Committee of Union and Progress used the opportunity to blur the boundaries between the civilian and military spheres and to place the army under its domination. Notes Ahmed Lûtfî, Tarih-…

A Brief History of the Late Ottoman Empire
Turkey, Islamists and Democracy
Yıldız Atasoy's Turkey, Islamists and Democracy is the product of an extremely ambitious project that aims to situate Turkish political Islam in global, historical, economic, political, and cultural contexts. Atasoy argues that Islamist policies ‘must be understood in terms of global capitalism, the reorganization of states, political alliances, and cultures’, and that ‘it is important to reveal the historical specificity’ (pp. 14–15). Deeply inf…

The Young Turks In Opposition
This is the first in-depth study of the secret society called CUP (Committee of Union and Progress), based on their own papers. It pays special attention to the Young Turks as an intellectual movement which continues to influence the thinking of Turkish intellectuals in the 1990s. It also provides important insights into diplomatic relations between the Ottoman Empire and the so-called Great Powers of Europe at the turn of the century.
