  • Examining the postpartum period through social media

Ashley MacPherson, Morgan Reid et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Popular Media•2023

  • Duty-related stressors, adjustment, and the role of coping processes in first responders

Natalie D Dautovich, Marcella Katjijova et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2022

Additional research focused on both primary appraisals and coping efforts and that employs longitudinal designs would expand our understanding of the role of coping processes in first responders' adjustment to duty-related stress. Further, these data suggest that interventions targeting individuals (vs. systems or environments) should focus on replacing cognitive and behavioral disengaged coping strategies with engaged strategies that are cogniti…

  • Sleep and Social Wellness

Open Access•Sarah Ghose, Morgan Reid et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The present study is an initial step in providing evidence for the importance of sleep for social functioning. Future research should attend to the association between past sleep behaviors and social functioning, specifically the mechanisms by which sleep is associated with social well-being as well as the temporal associations in an adult sample

  • Examining and Promoting Sleep Health in the Undergraduate Classroom

Open Access•Natalie D Dautovich, Ashley MacPherson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Objective: Although college students are at heightened risk for sleep disturbances, healthy sleep is associated with positive physical, cognitive, psychological, and academic benefits for this group. The goals of the current study were to (1) describe sleep health in an undergraduate college sample and (2) examine the role of a class activity using self-determination theory to promote better sleep health in this group. Methods: A cohort study was…

  • Practice Does Not Make Perfect

Open Access•Natalie D Dautovich, Morgan Reid et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Dysfunctional beliefs and sleep competence emerged as mechanisms through which maladaptive perfectionism may function as a barrier to healthy sleep. Although prior research positions perfectionism as a primary correlate of poor sleep, the current study identifies the role of beliefs about sleep as the pathway from perfectionism to poorer sleep health. The results highlight the importance of addressing both maladaptive beliefs about sleep as well …

  • Changes in Physician Telemedicine Use during Covid-19

    Open Access•Bradford S Pierce, Paul B Perrin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Telemedicine use increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, but uptake was uneven and future use is uncertain. This study, then, examined the ability of personal and environmental variables to predict telemedicine adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 230 physicians practicing in the U.S. completed questions concerning personal and environmental characteristics, as well as telemedicine use at three time points: pre-pandemic, during the p…

  • Lifestyle Factors and Sleep Health across the Lifespan

    Open Access•Joseph M Dzierzewski, Sahar M Sabet et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Sleep health, operationalized as a multidimensional construct consisting of sleep regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration, is an emerging concept in the field of sleep medicine which warrants further investigation. The purpose of the present study was to: (1) compare sleep health across the lifespan, (2) determine lifestyle factors associated with sleep health, and (3) examine whether lifestyle factors associated wit…

  • Role Stress and Sense of Control Predict Using Food to Cope With Stress in Midlife Women

Open Access•Dana R Riedy, Ashley MacPherson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2021•References: 1

Objective: The current study examined the association between role stress and using food to cope with stress in midlife women and examined sense of control as a potential underlying mechanism. Methods : An archival analysis was performed using data from 638 midlife women from the Midlife in the United States II study. Results: Hierarchical linear regression analyses demonstrated that work stress (β = .180, p p b = 0.02, 95% CI [.0014, .0314]). Di…

  • The Associations Between Dispositional Mindfulness, Sense of Control, and Affect in a National Sample of Adults

    Janna L Imel, Natalie D Dautovich•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The present study examined factors associated with better affective experiences across the life span, extending existing research to older adults. Specifically, we investigated dispositional mindfulness and sense of control as predictors of affect and sense of control as a potential mediator of the mindfulness—affect associations. We hypothesized that dispositional mindfulness mediated by sense of control would predict affective outcomes. An arch…

  • Variability in Self-Reported Normal Sleep Across the Adult Age Span

    Haley R Dillon, Kenneth L Lichstein et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 4

To truly assess and understand individual differences in the sleep of older adults, future research needs to take into account night-to-night variability (including what makes sleep vary from one night to the next), in addition to average sleep

  • Six-Month Utilization of Psychotherapy by Older Adults with Depressive Symptoms

    Open Access•Amber M Gum, Anne Hirsch et al.•ARTICLE•Community Mental Health Journal•2014•References: 20

  • Variety is the Spice of Life

    Natalie D Dautovich, Kristy D Shoji et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2013•References: 1

Intraindividual variability, not mean timing of daily activities, best-predicted sleep outcomes. Variability was associated with positive sleep outcomes for older, but not younger adults

  • Sleep Complaints, Subjective and Objective Sleep Patterns, Health, Psychological Adjustment, and Daytime Functioning in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Christina S Mccrae, Marian Rowe et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 1

We examined sleep complaints, subjective and objective sleep patterns, health, psychological adjustment, and daytime functioning in 103 community-dwelling older adults to identify factors associated with sleep complaints. We collected 2 weeks of sleep diaries and actigraphy. Only health distinguished complaining from noncomplaining sleepers. Noncomplaining good sleepers had poorer objective sleep quantity than complaining poor sleepers. Actigraph…
