Disrupting hegemonic conceptions of parental engagement
This research draws on Intersectionality, Coloniality and Quiet Resistance (QR) to explore the experiences of working-class Somali immigrant mothers in an urban school in East London, UK.Particularly, the study explores communal pedagogies of resistance that Somali women engage in their mothering work.We do this by centering the stories and experiences of mothers with their children's school.Our analysis shows three interrelated themes that chara…

In this paper, we explore moments of racial awakening among East African communities in Minnesota. We examine how the events around the George Floyd protests have opened up racial conversations (and gave permission) for many East African Americans in MN, to voice their own pain of being racialized. In this essay, I argue that Somali identities exist within a long history of immigrant aspirations toward what scholars call “whiteness” and their resistance to being identified within identities associated with Blackness.
