The Beautiful Game
For Dana It is often forgotten that a variety of French peculiar to the British Isles, known as Anglo-Norman was, for more than four centuries post-Conquest, the default language for inscriptions of an amatory nature, on jewellery especially. The large number of inscribed rings, brooches and seal matrices unearthed by metal-detectorists in recent decades whose finds are recorded in detail on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) database have pro…

A Medieval Choirstall Desk-End at Haddon Hall
An unprovenanced fragment of wood sculpture from Haddon Hall is shown to be a medieval desk-end of special iconographical and sculptural interest. Probably dating from shortly after the 1380s, it incorporates one of the earliest known examples of the fox-as-bishop sequence of scenes in European woodwork, as well as the earliest extant English vernacular inscription in woodwork
Folklore Motifs in Late Medieval Art III
IN two previous articles in Folklore (vol. 100, 1989; vol. 101, 1990) I explored some themes of folk humour and satire in the pictorial arts and verbal idioms of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the present paper I shall discuss the erotic symbolism associated with certain animals during these periods

The Cult of August Stramm in Der Sturm
Exceptional even for his pronouncements in Der Sturm, such tones of reverence and fervour from Herwarth Walden celebrate his friend and protege Stramm as a mystical spirit of pure poetry in triumph over the grave. Among other figures linked by friendship with Walden and contribution to Der Sturm (Scheerbart, Lasker-Schuler, and Schwitters) , Stramm stands out as the most potent force in the establishment of a definite identity for the periodical.…
