Exceptional even for his pronouncements in Der Sturm, such tones of reverence and fervour from Herwarth Walden celebrate his friend and protege Stramm as a mystical spirit of pure poetry in triumph over the grave. Among other figures linked by friendship with Walden and contribution to Der Sturm (Scheerbart, Lasker-Schuler, and Schwitters) , Stramm stands out as the most potent force in the establishment of a definite identity for the periodical. His work embodied Walden's `Wunder,' a pronouncement inspired by that faith in art as an essential life-force that was elaborated via the periodical into `Sturmkunsttheorie.' As the most powerfully concentrated expression of this faith in terms of literature, Stramm's writing excited wilder adulation from those involved in the Sturm-organization than did the work of any other contributor. 2 This investigation does not deal with his work but with its influence among subsequent contributors to Der Sturm.
