Tangible insights on the strategizing of language learners and users
This article presents reflections from 12 experts on language learners strategy (LLS) research. They were asked to offer their reflections in one of their domains of expertise, linking research into LLS with successful language learning and use practices. In essence, they were called upon to provide a review of recent scholarship by identifying areas where results of research had already led to the enhancement of learner strategy use, as well as …
Digital games and language teaching and learning
The digital gaming industry has captured the public's attention worldwide and in the United States alone, the video game industry is predicted to increase by 30% from 2010 to 2019, reaching $19.6 billion in revenue (Takahashi, 2015, n.p.). Not surprisingly, digital gameplay is also rapidly expanding in educational domains. Although researchers have often cautioned that digital games are not a panacea or magic bullet, for the past decade educators…
Synthetic Immersive Environments and Second Language Pragmatic Development
Synthetic immersive environments (SIEs) are engineered, digital spaces which draw on the complex, goal‐directed, collaborative game‐play behavior of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) “to produce explicit, educationally related outcomes in simulated, relevant interactional contexts” (Sykes, 2008, pp. 10–11).

(In)Commensurable Discourse: Researchers and Practitioners Bring Pragmatics to Language Learning
The recent surge in a growing body of empirical research is evidence of a strong theoretical push towards L2 pragmatic acquisition in the field of second language acquisition; yet, the reality is that we see very little evidence of pragmatics instruction in L2 contexts, suggesting a notable disconnect between theory and practice. This viewpoints article explores the valuable role both researchers and practitioners play in bridging the gap between…
Second Language Use, Socialization, and Learning in Internet Interest Communities and Online Gaming
In recent years, there has been a great deal of research and pedagogical experimentation relating to the uses of technology in second (L2) and foreign language education. The majority of this research has usefully described and examined the efficacy of in‐class and directly classroom‐related uses of technology. This article broadens the scope of inquiry to include L2 and foreign language‐related uses of technology that extend into the interstitia…
Qué feíto estás tú también, cariño: A Comparison of the Response to the Use of ‘Positive’ Irony for Complimenting in Peninsular and Mexican Spanish
Previous work examining irony has indicated that positive irony can be used to convey praise and build solidarity in both compliments and compliment responses. However, systematic, cross-dialectal work in this area is still relatively scarce. Using an e-DCT (i.e. an electronically delivered discourse completion task that includes a verbal report component), this study compares compliment-response sequences, which include the presence and absence …
Educating Parents in the Spanish-Speaking Community: A Look at Translated Educational Materials
Federal legislation (White House Executive Order 13166, 2000) mandates that language services be provided to limited English proficient populations by health care providers receiving federal funding. In order to do this, some basic resources have been developed to administer medical services. Nevertheless, the translation aspects of these guidelines often lack many components that would be necessary to assure the functional adequacy of the transl…
