    The paintings discussed in this article are offerings dedicated to the deceased rather than prayers for their salvation. The paintings generally consist of two parts: the upper part, which depicts a well- known Buddhist deity, very often Guanyin, who seems to function as a patron of prayer; and the lower part, which consists of various numbers of standing figures.     Paintings from Tun-huang represent Kuan-yin, especially the Kuan-yin with thousand arms and thousand eyes, surrounded by a multitude of lesser gods. The lower corners are often occupied by two terrifying deities of the vidyārāja type. Several such paintings kept at the Musée Guimet and the British Museum bear inscriptions giving these two deities rather obscure names of vajra-bearers.
