The paintings discussed in this article are offerings dedicated to the deceased rather than prayers for their salvation. The paintings generally consist of two parts: the upper part, which depicts a well- known Buddhist deity, very often Guanyin, who seems to function as a patron of prayer; and the lower part, which consists of various numbers of standing figures. These figures depict the deceased in person as well as the people who commissioned the painting and members of their family. Inscriptions indicate the names of all these people, their relationship to the deceased, and occasionally their titles and other details. This article presents focused analysis of specific topics, including: 1. the aim of those who commissioned the paintings; 2. family lineage; 3. newlyweds; 4. censers; 5. monks and nuns; 6. the deceased; 7. costumes and head-dresses; 8. the painters
