International evidence on the impact of transfers and taxes on alternative poverty indexes
Economics, environment and equity
Although allocation of scarce resources among alternative uses to satisfy unlimited human wants in the positivist framework (a la Lionel Robbins)has been a focus of economists for a long time, awareness of resource scarcity in the ecological sense and discussion of the relevant issues in the context of distributive justice, as well as intergenerational equity, are of more recent vintage. Toward A Just World Economy
If a creature from Mars were to visit our planet, he/she would likely be puzzled by the large differences in the availability of goods and services to individuals and households, differences both within societies (which we call nation-states) and between societies. The Martian creature (assuming he/she has analytical skills) might first wonder whether the global economy on this planet is an efficient one. This puzzlement could be interpreted to m…
Solidarity: Reflections and Prospects
The conference from which this issue sprang provided a forum for a lively exchange of ideas and a discussion of many important questions. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to present a summary, let alone a synthesis of all the ideas presented. The following paragraphs represent one participant's attempt to sort out several of the ideas and questions and to put them in a framework of thought
