  • High levels of urinary naphthalene metabolites measured in a sample of California schoolchildren

Open Access•Susan Hurley, Rosemary Castorina et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are common air pollutants, and many are human toxicants. Naphthalene is one of the most pervasive PAHs and is highly toxic. Children are especially vulnerable to the adverse health effects associated with exposure to these chemicals. Methods: We conducted a pilot study to characterize PAH and VOC exposures to schoolchildren living in a community heavily bu…

  • Policy-relevant differences between secondhand and thirdhand smoke

    Open Access•Georg E Matt, Lydia H Greiner et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

Starting in the 1970s, individuals, businesses and the public have increasingly benefited from policies prohibiting smoking indoors, saving thousands of lives and billions of dollars in healthcare expenditures. Smokefree policies to protect against secondhand smoke exposure, however, do not fully protect the public from the persistent and toxic chemical residues from tobacco smoke (also known as thirdhand smoke) that linger in indoor environments…

  • Adhesion and Removal of Thirdhand Smoke from Indoor Fabrics

Open Access•Giovanna L Pozuelos, Peyton Jacob et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Thirdhand smoke (THS) is an environmental contaminant that may cause adverse health effects in smokers and nonsmokers. Currently, time-consuming analytical methods are necessary to assess chemicals in THS repositories, like upholstered furniture and clothing. Our goal was to develop a rapid, accessible method that can be used to measure THS contamination in common household fabrics and to evaluate remediation. Cotton, terry cloth, polyester, and …

  • Biochemical Verification of Tobacco Use and Abstinence

    Open Access•Neal L Benowitz, John T Bernert et al.•ARTICLE•Nicotine & Tobacco Research•2020

BACKGROUND: The changing prevalence and patterns of tobacco use, the advent of novel nicotine delivery devices, and the development of new biomarkers prompted an update of the 2002 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) report on whether and how to apply biomarker verification for tobacco use and abstinence. METHODS: The SRNT Treatment Research Network convened a group of investigators with expertise in tobacco biomarkers to update t…

  • A Casino goes smoke free

    Georg E Matt, Penelope J E Quintana et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2018

Long-term smoking in a casino creates deep THS reservoirs that persist for months after a smoking ban. A complete smoking ban immediately improves air quality and significantly reduces exposure to SHS and THS. However, THS reservoirs contribute to continued low-level exposure to toxicants. To accelerate the effect of smoking bans, remediation efforts should address specific THS reservoirs, which may require intensive cleaning as well as replaceme…

  • Thirdhand smoke contamination in hospital settings

Thomas F Northrup, Amir Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2015

THS appears to be ubiquitous, even in closely guarded healthcare settings. Future research will address potential health consequences and THS-reduction policies. Ultimately, hospital policies and interventions to reduce THS transport and exposure may prove necessary, especially for immunocompromised children

  • Different profiles of carcinogen exposure in Chinese compared with US cigarette smokers

Neal L Benowitz, Quan Gan et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2014

    NCT00264342

  • Biomarkers of secondhand smoke exposure in automobiles

Ian A Jones, Gideon St Helen et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2013

Brief SHS exposure in cars resulted in substantial increases in levels of tobacco biomarkers in non-smokers. For optimal characterisation of SHS exposure, tobacco biomarkers should be measured within 4-8 h post-exposure. Additional studies are needed to better describe the relationship between tobacco biomarkers and environmental markers of SHS

  • Thirdhand Tobacco Smoke

    Open Access•Georg E Matt, Penelope J E Quintana et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Health Perspectives•2011

BACKGROUND: There is broad consensus regarding the health impact of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, yet considerable ambiguity exists about the nature and consequences of thirdhand smoke (THS). OBJECTIVES: We introduce definitions of THS and THS exposure and review recent findings about constituents, indoor sorption-desorption dynamics, and transformations of THS; distribution and persistence of THS in residential settings; implication…

  • Attitudes and Practices of Hookah Smokers in the San Francisco Bay Area

Bilaal Ahmed, Peyton Jacob et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2011

As many as 10 million people will die annually by the year 2030 due to tobacco-related causes. While much research has focused on cigarettes, the increasing popularity of smoking hookah (water pipe) has received much less attention. Epidemiological studies have been carried out in India, Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait, and Lebanon, but there are few in the United States. Hookah smoking is typically a social activity and there are many myths and rumors a…

    Open Access•Neal L Benowitz, Janne Hukkanen et al.•CHAPTER•Nicotine Psychopharmacology•2009

  • Bupropion in breast milk

    Jennifer S Haas, Celia P Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2004

Bupropion and its active metabolites are present in the breast milk of lactating women. The concentrations of bupropion in breast milk and urine were highly correlated. These results indicate that the daily dose of bupropion and metabolites that would be delivered to an infant of a woman taking a therapeutic dose of bupropion is small. These results suggest that the effectiveness of bupropion to prevent post-partum relapse to tobacco use should b…

  • Cotinine in the serum, saliva, and urine of nonsmokers, passive smokers, and active smokers

    Michael A Wall, J Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1988•Cited by: 6•References: 17

Cotinine was measured in the serum, saliva, and urine of nonsmokers, passive smokers, and active smokers. Serum and saliva could not discriminate between nonsmokers and passive smokers. Mean urine cotinine was higher in passive smokers than nonsmokers but there was a great deal of intersubject overlap. Cotinine in all body fluids could separate active smokers from the other two groups. Among smokers, light smokers had lower levels than heavier sm…

  • What Latin is of most worth

    Peyton Jacob•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•1923

More definitely stated, the problem is: What vocabulary and syntax, what reading material, and what choice of emphasis among the several accepted values of Latin study, are of most worth to the highschool student, irrespective of subsequent work in the subject? The study of this problem is the outgrowth of a group undertaking, in which the present writer participated, under the direction of Prof. J. J. Didcoct, Professor of Secondary Education, G…
