Exploring How Holistic Teaching and Institutional Support Relate to Community College STEM Students’ Momentum and Self-Efficacy in Career-Relevant Competencies
This study investigates how holistic teaching practices and institutional support at community colleges shape science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students’ momentum and self-efficacy in career-relevant competencies. Using survey data from three community colleges, we apply structural equation modeling (SEM) to assess these relationships while accounting for institutional variation using multi-group analysis. Our findings demo…
“I Just Really Want to Do Something, Even if it’s Small, That is Changing the World for the better”—How Community College Students Grapple with Mental Health and Career Development
This sequential exploratory mixed methods study explores how mental health experiences shape career development among students at a Midwestern community college. We conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with 27 students with mental health challenges, followed by analysis of survey data from 1,607 students to examine differences between those with and without mental health conditions. Integrating qualitative and quantitative findings, thr…
The Core‐Periphery Model Under Additively Separable Preferences
This paper reexamines Krugman's core‐periphery model by substituting his constant elasticity of substitution (CES) utility with a general additively separable utility that comprehensively captures the pro‐competitive effect while preserving the income effect. The heterogeneous consumption patterns of skilled workers and unskilled workers introduce a demand adjustment effect. The resulting interaction between the dispersion force, driven by the pr…
Stated Value, Renewed Commitment? Community and Technical Colleges’ Response to Racial (In)equities During Covid-19
In this study, we interrogated the efforts adopted by community and technical colleges in a Midwestern state to address racial inequities since the onset of COVID-19. We analyzed such efforts reported in institutional newsletters and associated media through critical content analysis supported by text mining techniques. Our findings demonstrate a notable reckoning with racial inequities on the part of institutional leaders and stakeholders. Howev…
Exploring the Relationship Between Community College Students’ Exposure to Math Contextualization and Educational Outcomes
The criticality of international tourism and technological innovation for carbon neutrality across regional development levels
Development zones and firms’ performance
This paper examines the policy effect of development zones on firms’ performance, excluding the agglomeration effect. We constructed an industrial cluster dataset on China’s manufacturing industries to identify the impacts on firms’ productivity and other performance indices after the establishment of development zones in 2006. Based on the estimated results obtained from a difference-in-differences analysis, development zones are conducive to pr…
It Matters Long Before
A missing component in the current transfer literature is how community college students’ exposure to faculty and/or advisors at baccalaureate institutions early in their educational journey, such as meeting with transfer advisors or faculty members from a baccalaureate college or university, may shape their longer-term transfer outcomes. Our research addresses this gap, drawing upon longitudinal survey data and propensity score matching. The fin…

Industrial policy and economic geography
This paper investigates the trends and determinants of geographic concentration and industrial specialization in China, using provincial panel data for the period 1999–2010. It is shown that after 2005, both geographic concentration and industrial specialization began to decline, resulting in an increased similarity of industrial structure among provinces. This paper posits that the industrial policies of the provincial governments are the cause …
Does development zone have spillover effect in China
We construct a new database of spatial relations between industrial firms and development zones using the Application Programming Interface addressing and document the development zones' spillover effect on firms' total factor productivity (TFP). Development zones significantly improve the TFP of surrounding firms, which attenuates with the distance from a development zone, and increases with the density of development zones in a given area. The …
