Frederick John Lamp (2024) – Python Spirit on the Baga Coast–A Scientific and Art Historical Investigation

Some Preliminary Responses to “Beyond Single Stories”
In the following responses to our Winter 2019 First Word essay, “Beyond Single Stories: Addressing Dynamism, Specificity, and Agency in Arts of Africa” (African Arts vol. 52, no. 4, pp. 1–6), Leslie Wilson, John Monroe, Salia Malé and Marguerite de Sabran, Maxime de Formanoir, and Joshua Cohen separately expand upon our thought that we must reimagine language for writing and presenting so-called historical arts of Africa to disparate audiences. T…
Beyond Single Stories: Addressing Dynamism, Specificity, and Agency in Arts of Africa

The Intellectual Film: Eisenstein's Plan to Film Marx's Capital
Not long ago an unknown manuscript surfaced from Eisenstein's estate: a diary consisting of notes on his plan to make a film of Capital. The significance of these pages, which he dashed off at various odd times and in various odd locations (in cutting rooms, at his desk, etc.) as footnotes or memos on scratch paper, is greater than the eccentric and daring idea might suggest. Not only do they give us an insight into the young Eisenstein's always …
