Prevalence and determinants of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency among three immigrant groups in Finland: Evidence from a population-based study using standardised 25-hydroxyvitamin D data
Objective: We investigated the determinants of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [S-25(OH)D] and dietary vitamin D sources among three immigrant groups in Finland and compared their S-25(OH)D to the general Finnish population. Design: Cross-sectional population-based Migrant Health and Wellbeing Study and the nationally representative Finnish Health 2011 Survey. S-25(OH)D was standardised according to the Vitamin D Standardisation Program. Vitamin D sour…
Vitamin D status in a multi-ethnic population of northern Norway: The Saminor 2 Clinical Survey
Objective To investigate serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (S-25(OH)D) concentration in a multi-ethnic population of northern Norway and determine predictors of S-25(OH)D, including Sami ethnicity. Design Cross-sectional data from the second survey of the Population-based Study on Health and Living Conditions in Regions with Sami and Norwegian Populations (the SAMINOR 2 Clinical Survey, 2012–2014). S-25(OH)D was measured by the IDS-iSYS 25-Hydroxy Vitami…

Vitamin D in public health nutrition
The year 2013 was again a very active year in the vitamin D field. The selection of papers discussed here focus on vitamin D intake, fortification, supplements, and vitamin D status and its associations with diseases and health. Here, we discuss several of the papers in the context of methodological challenges and gaps in current knowledge

Habitual high phosphorus intakes and foods with phosphate additives negatively affect serum parathyroid hormone concentration: A cross-sectional study on healthy premenopausal women
Objective Foods can contain natural phosphorus (NP) and phosphate-containing food additives (AP). The main objective of the present study was to investigate whether NP and AP of habitual diets differ in their effects on markers of Ca metabolism. We also investigated the impact of total habitual dietary P intake on markers of Ca metabolism. Design Cross-sectional study. Fasting blood samples were collected and participants kept a 4 d food record, …
Vitamin D status of 51–75-year-old Irish women: Its determinants and impact on biochemical indices of bone turnover
Objectives To assess the vitamin D status of Irish postmenopausal women during wintertime, and to examine its relationship with serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and biochemical markers of bone turnover. In addition, the determinants of wintertime serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OH–D) levels in these women were investigated. Design A cross-sectional observational study. Setting Cork City, Ireland (52°N). Subjects Ninety-five apparently healthy, free-l…
Food consumption and nutrient intakes with a special focus on milk product consumption in early pubertal girls in Central Finland
Objective To evaluate the current status of dietary intakes in early pubertal girls with a special focus on milk products. Design Cross-sectional data using 3-day food records. Subjects Eight hundred and sixty girls, aged 10–12 years, at Tanner maturation stage I-III. Results The mean consumption of milk products (620 g day −1 ) was similar to that of a Finnish study in the 1980s, while the consumption of non-milk drinks (403 gday −1 ) had increa…
