  • Students' approaches to open‐ended science investigation: The importance of substantive and procedural understanding

Ros Roberts, Richard Gott et al.•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 27

This paper investigates the respective roles of substantive and procedural understanding with regard to students' ability to carry out an open‐ended science investigation. The research is a case study centred on an intervention in which undergraduate initial teacher training students are taught the basic building blocks of procedural understanding. They are then put in the position of solving a practical open‐ended investigation. We report on the…

    Open Access•Richard Gott•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2007•Cited by: 43•References: 8

Latin America's nineteenth century history of Europeanisation, immigration and extermination suggests that the continent should fit neatly into the category of 'settler colonialism', a notion usually employed to describe the white settler colonies of European empires other than those of Spain and Portugal. While the last years of empire and the early days of the republics saw efforts to include the indigenous population as citizens, the racist wh…

  • What can the Commonwealth learn from its history

    Richard Gott•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2001

There are several ways of looking at the history of the British Empire—from the point of view of the pro-consuls, the Westminster and religious opposition, the settlers, and the rebels. Yet although these have been examined in many Commonwealth countries, this revisionism needs to make more headway in Britain itself

  • Che Guevera and the Congo

    Richard Gott•ARTICLE•New left review•1996

It’s Che Guevara time again in the pleasure gardens of the West, as publishers and television companies gear themselves up for the thirtieth anniversary of the guerrilla leader’s death in 1997. We’ve already had the early motorcycle diaries, published all over Europe in 1995, and no less than

  • Land Without Evil: Utopian Journeys Across the South American Watershed

Jerry W Cooney, Richard Gott•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1994

All too often, travel writers plunge into seemingly obscure parts of the globe with little knowledge of where they are, whom they are among, or what has happened there in the past. In this trend-breaking anti travel book, Richard Gott describes his own journey through the heart of South America, across the swampland that forms the watershed between the River Plate and the River Amazon. But the story of his expedition takes second place to a brill…

    Open Access•Douglas P Newton, Richard Gott•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•1989•Cited by: 2•References: 2

School science teaching is often criticised for being didactic and too centred on the products of science. A number of important bodies urge teachers to give more attention to science as a way of thinking and working. However, what they mean by process‐centred investigative approaches is often unclear. The content of a number of science texts claiming to support such an approach and intended for use in the lower secondary school was analysed to s…
