Beyond starchitecture: The shared architectural language of urban memorial spaces
This article investigates the role of architecture in inscribing the collective memory of mass atrocities in the urban landscape. Through the study of public memorial spaces located in four European cities, it investigates the ways in which architecture can act as a non-verbal language apt to translate, into material form, a reality that is too harsh to otherwise communicate. We argue that the memorial’s aesthetic qualities, relationship to the s…
Mega-events and Urban Image Construction: Beijing and Rio de Janeiro
While societies shape the way their cities look and are represented, urban images, in turn, nurture and structure social relations in multiple ways. Nowhere is this dialectical relationship between social processes and urban representations more visible than in the hosting of global spectacles such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, which both embody some of society’s deepest dreams and desires. The focus of this book is the image of ci…
Reinventing Rio de Janeiro’s old port: Territorial stigmatization, symbolic re-signification, and planned repopulation in Porto Maravilha | A reinvenção da zona portuária do Rio de Janeiro: estigmatiz…
Rio de Janeiro’s former port has undergone an intense process of transformation driven by investor expectations and real estate profitability objectives. However, in this depressed area, long marked by various territorial stigmas, the rise in land value largely depends upon symbolic revaluation. One of the main objectives of the large-scale urban redevelopment project known as Porto Maravilha is to reverse existing perceptions of the port area, m…
Mega-events and urban regeneration in Rio de Janeiro: Planning in a state of emergency
This article examines the role of sporting mega-events in the reconfiguration of the urban landscape, to understand some of their impacts upon social groups directly affected by large projects involved in the construction of the so-called ‘Olympic City’. It studies the case of Rio de Janeiro, which will host the 2014 football World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The article seeks to demonstrate how mega-events are being instrumentalized b…
Images of Power: Architectures of the Integrated Spectacle at the Beijing Olympics
Arguing for the continued relevance of the spectacle as a powerful conceptual tool for analyzing structures of power and revealing how they co-opt the material landscape to build, consolidate, and reproduce their hegemony, this article uses the theory of the spectacle as a lens to interpret the proliferation of architectural mega-projects in the contemporary landscape. Using the case of Olympic Beijing, the author revisits the notion of the spect…
Spectacular Beijing: The Conspicuous Construction of an Olympic Metropolis
This article presents a critical review of Beijing’s Olympic redevelopment, and of the social, economic, and political impacts of hosting mega events as a means of urban image construction. Through an analysis of Olympic projects, city marketing initiatives, and their impact on the city’s material and cultural landscape, this article postulates that Beijing’s spatial restructuring and image construction program played an important role in exacerb…
The Making and Selling of Post-Mao Beijing
Describes the changing life of the city and its inhabitants during the final decades of the twentieth century and examines the complex forces at play in the search for modernity. The author presents us with four case studies of how the city is marketing and selling itself (including its refurbishment for the 2008 Olympic bid) and concludes that Beijing's urban image construction may provide an avenue for opposition groups to challenge the hegemon…
