O artigo examina o papel da "arquitetura do espetáculo" na reurbanização de Pequim em meio aos preparativos para sediar os Jogos Olímpicos de 2008. A autora argumenta que os megaprojetos arquitetônicos contribuíram para legitimar as estruturas de poder autocráticas da China pós-socialista, servindo como instrumento de criação de imagem e propaganda estatal e desviando a atenção popular das mazelas sociais causadas pelo processo de reurbanização. Por outro lado, destaca o lado produtivo dessa espetacularização, que pode suscitar diversas formas de contestação popular aos discursos hegemônicos
