The association between indoor biofuel use for cooking and glucose metabolism in adults
The burden of type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but determinants are not well-characterized. Household air pollution (HAP) from indoor biofuel use for cooking has been associated with non-communicable diseases and could be contributing to the increasing burden of diabetes in LMICs, though data are limited. We assessed the association between indoor biofuel use for cooking and glucose metabolism in …
Predictors of change in early child development among children with stunting
Millions of children under 5 years in low- and middle-income countries fail to attain their development potential with accruing short- and long-term consequences. Low length/height for age (stunting) is known to be a key factor, but there is little data on how child characteristics are linked with developmental changes among children with stunting. We assessed the socioeconomic, household, anthropometric, and clinical predictors of change in earl…
Correlates of early child development among children with stunting
Many children in low- and middle-income countries are not attaining their developmental potential. Stunting is associated with poor child development, but it is not known which correlates of stunting are impairing child development. We explored potential socioeconomic, nutritional, clinical, and household correlates of early child development among 12-59-month-old children with stunting in a cross-sectional study in Uganda. Development was assess…
Association between birth length, linear growth velocities, and primary school achievement at age 10 years
Greater birth length and higher growth velocity from 6 to 24 months were associated with higher school achievement and being in the appropriate grade-for-age, respectively. Children who experienced growth failure were less likely to achieve a high MES score. Interventions aimed at improving school achievement should address maternal and fetal nutrition and health, and monitor post-natal growth
Association of schistosome infection with adiposity in Tanzania
Background Observational studies in humans have reported a link between schistosome infection and lower adiposity, but this may be explained by socioeconomic and demographic factors, intensity of infection, or common co-infections such as HIV. Methods This was a cross-sectional study that investigated the relationship between schistosome infection and adiposity in a large, well-described cohort of Tanzanian adults living with and without HIV. Cro…
Perceptions, facilitators and barriers of physical activity among people living with HIV
The findings demonstrated differing perceptions, facilitators and barriers of physical activity among PLWH. Interventions addressing awareness, gender stereotypes and roles related to physical activity from individual to community level are needed. Supportive environment and infrastructures are needed to improve physical activity levels in PLWH in Tanzania
HIV and metabolic syndrome in an Ethiopian population
HIV was associated with MS among ART-naïve women, suggesting that MS should be evaluated before initiating ART and monitored during treatment to identify those at risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD)
Early development in children with moderate acute malnutrition
Malnutrition impairs cognitive, communication, and motor development, but it is not known how nutrition and health are associated with development in children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). We aimed to describe motor and language development of children with MAM and explore its nutrition and health-related correlates. This cross-sectional study used baseline data from a nutritional trial in children with MAM aged 6-23 months in Burkina F…

Conceptual equivalence of WHOQOL-HIV among people living with HIV in Ethiopia
