Infants’ resting-state functional connectivity and event-related potentials: A multimodal approach to investigating the neural basis of infant novelty detection
Individual differences in how the brain responds to novelty are present from infancy. A common method of studying novelty processing is through event-related potentials (ERPs). While ERPs possess millisecond precision, spatial resolution remains poor, especially in infancy. This study aimed to balance spatial and temporal precision by combining ERP data with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Twenty-nine infants (15 female) underw…

Prologue to Annihilation: Ordinary American and British Jews Challenge the Third Reich
Prologue to Annihilation is a compelling account of the early anti-Jewish actions of Germany's Third Reich and the efforts in the United States and Great Britain to counter those abuses. An extensive and growing literature examines the steps that led to the Final Solution, the effort to exterminate Jewry during World War II, and the ineffective American and British responses. Prologue to Annihilation tells the awful story, in graphic detail, of w…
The General vs. the President: MacArthur and Truman at the Brink of Nuclear War
The General vs. the President is a riveting account of the conflict between two towering figures of the early Cold War era. Harry S. Truman was the accidental president who entered the White House on the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt and sought to establish himself as a forceful leader. Douglas MacArthur was one of the nation's most decorated military leaders, a heroic figure during World War II who, in the aftermath of the war, was establishing…
Daisy Petals and Mushroom Clouds: LBJ, Barry Goldwater, and the Ad That Changed American Politics
Daisy Petals and Mushroom Clouds by the journalist and historian Robert Mann is a thoughtful and engaging account of the television advertisement that made a huge splash in the U.S. presidential election of 1964. That advertisement showed a little girl counting (often non-sequentially) the petals on a daisy as she pulled them off, and it then shifted to an ominous countdown that culminated in a nuclear blast. It concluded by declaring that the st…
Permutation inference for the general linear model
Permutation methods can provide exact control of false positives and allow the use of non-standard statistics, making only weak assumptions about the data. With the availability of fast and inexpensive computing, their main limitation would be some lack of flexibility to work with arbitrary experimental designs. In this paper we report on results on approximate permutation methods that are more flexible with respect to the experimental design and…

The Cold War and the United States Information Agency: American Propaganda and Public Diplomacy, 1945-1989
Public diplomacy played an increasingly important role in the post-World War II years. In The Cold War and the United States Information Agency, Nicholas J. Cull, a professor of public diplomacy at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, chronicles the birth, growth, and demise of the U.S. Information Agency (usia), America's vibrant and visible propaganda organization. In a clear, crisp account that draws…

Mobilizing the Home Front: War Bonds and Domestic Propaganda
Mobilizing the Home Front is a perceptive account of the way the campaigns selling savings bonds bolstered morale in the United States during World War II. James J. Kimble, an assistant professor of communication at Seton Hall University, compellingly argues that even though American leaders were reluctant to engage in an aggressive propaganda campaign at home, they managed to communicate their aims and mobilize people through bond sales, which a…

America's Message in the Cold War
Cold War diplomacy involved more than summit meetings and negotiating sessions alone. Propaganda played an important part as well. In the late 1950s, the United States tried to destabilize Communist regimes in countries behind the Iron Curtain by providing a glimpse of the good life – defined in materialistic terms – that was available in the democratic West. Shifting away from an often-strident propaganda approach that derived from the psycholog…

At first glance, Paul Boyer's fascinating book When Time Shall Be No More appears unrelated to the field of American foreign relations. In fact, it has a special relevance to the world of foreign affairs, as should become clear from an overview of the ideas it presents. When Time Shall Be No More examines the pervasive belief in biblical prophecy that dominates American culture. Boyer, one of the very best intellectual historians in the United St…

The involvement of Rev. Lyman Beecher in the American temperance movement between 1800 and 1830 is traced and related to Beecher's particular form of Calvinism and to contemporary politics.
