Prologue to Annihilation is a compelling account of the early anti-Jewish actions of Germany's Third Reich and the efforts in the United States and Great Britain to counter those abuses. An extensive and growing literature examines the steps that led to the Final Solution, the effort to exterminate Jewry during World War II, and the ineffective American and British responses. Prologue to Annihilation tells the awful story, in graphic detail, of what happened in the years before the Holocaust shifted into high gear. The story is a grim one. Stephen H. Norwood describes the first efforts of Adolf Hitler's government to circumscribe Jews' activities in the early 1930s. He documents the growing actions to marginalize European Jews in increasingly hostile and abusive ways. And he analyzes the extensive struggles in both Great Britain and the United States to alert the world to the horrors unfolding in Germany. In chapter after chapter, Norwood chronicles “the persistent refusal of the American and British governments in these years to denounce Nazi terrorist violence against Jews, despite the attention the Western media drew to it” (p. 6
