  • Year Cognitive Change in the Faroese Septuagenarian Cohort and Impact of Sociodemographic, Lifestyle, and Health Factors

Open Access•Eina H Eliasen, Pál Weihe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2024•References: 1

ObjectivesTo investigate cognitive change in multiple cognitive domains in a population-based cohort of 713 Faroese older adults.MethodsParticipants were cognitively tested at baseline (70-74 years) and re-evaluated after 10 years. Changes in cognitive performance and the impact of sociodemographic factors, lifestyle, and health conditions were analysed using mixed-effect models. Participants free from dementia were studied in separate analyses.R…

  • Our evolved understanding of the human health risks of mercury

Open Access•Niladri Basu, Ashley Bastiansz et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 117

Mercury (Hg) is a chemical of health concern worldwide that is now being acted upon through the Minamata Convention. Operationalizing the Convention and tracking its effectiveness requires empathy of the diversity and variation of mercury exposure and risk in populations worldwide. As part of the health plenary for the 15th International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (ICMGP), this review paper details how scientific understandings h…

  • Future directions for monitoring and human health research for the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme

Open Access•Bryan Adlard, Shawn G Donaldson et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2018

For the last two and a half decades, a network of human health experts under the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) has produced several human health assessment reports. These reports have provided a base of scientific knowledge regarding environmental contaminants and their impact on human health in the Arctic. These reports provide scientific information and policy-relevant recommendations to Arctic governments. They also support i…

  • Hydroxylated PCB Metabolites in Nonhatched Fulmar Eggs from the Faroe Islands

Britta Fängström, Maria Athanasiadou et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005•References: 20

Thirty-six polychlorinated biphenylols (OH-PCBs) congeners were characterized in Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) eggs collected from the Faroe Islands. The seven most abundant congeners were quantified in 19 samples, and the ΣOH-PCB concentrations ranged between 0.92 and 4.0 ng g−1 fresh weight (f.w.). These eggs constitute a part of the traditional diet for at least a part of the population on the Faroe Islands and may contribute to the high levels …

  • Neurobehavioral performance of Inuit children with increased prenatal exposure to methylmercury

Open Access•Pál Weihe, Jens C Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002

Exposure to methylmercury from marine mammals and other seafood may affect the development of the central nervous system. In a traditional Inuit community in Qaanaaq, Greenland, mercury concentrations in cord blood and maternal hair have been examined in connection with all births. We examined 43 children at age 7-12 years with a battery of neurobehavioral tests. The average mercury concentration in hair was 5.0 microg/g and 1.5 microg/g in child…

  • Frequency of seafood intake in pregnancy as a determinant of birth weight

Sjurdur Frodi Olsen, Philippe Grandjean et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1993•Cited by: 18

STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aim was to explore whether maternal consumption of seafood is a determinant of birth weight in a dose dependent manner. DESIGN--A population based survey of lifestyle factors in pregnancy was linked with information from antenatal and obstetric records. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS--Seventy five per cent of all 1362 women who delivered in the Faroe Islands during the study period 1986-87 who gave a structured post partum intervie…
