  • Time on task limits psychotherapy's role in reducing the societal burden of aggression

Open Access•Joseph M Strayhorn, Joseph Strayhorn et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Aggression and violence, people's inhumanity to one another, are perhaps society's foremost problems. One approach to this problem is the provision of traditional clinical services through psychotherapy. Anger control is a learnable skill, but such learning requires "time on task." Our goal was to shed light on the potential impact of psychotherapy as a public health remedy, by studying how much psychotherapeutic intervention is bei…

  • A Randomized Trial of Individual Tutoring for Elementary School Children with Reading and Behavior Difficulties

    Open Access•Joseph M Strayhorn, Donna DiPrima Bickel•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2003

Children in Grades K-5, selected for reading and behavior problems, received individual tutoring in a program which aimed to detail a hierarchy of reading skills, locate the point on the hierarchy at which each child should work, and provide enthusiastic social reinforcement for successes. Children were randomly assigned to higher or lower frequency tutoring (one 45-min. session every 1.6 days vs every 8.3 days). The higher frequency group progre…

  • Reduction in Children's Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder during Individual Tutoring as Compared with Classroom Instruction

    Open Access•Joseph M Strayhorn, Donna DiPrima Bickel•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2002

Children who display symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in classrooms are reputed to display fewer symptoms in one-on-one interaction. We tested this hypothesis with children who received tutoring for reading and behavior problems. We selected 30 children whose teacher-rated ADHD symptoms fit a pattern consistent with DSM criteria for the diagnosis. Teachers rated the frequency of symptoms in classrooms before and after t…

  • Chronological age at entrance to first grade: Effects on elementary school success

Open Access•Donna DiPrima Bickel, Naomi Zigmond et al.•ARTICLE•Early Childhood Research Quarterly•1991•Cited by: 2

  • A measure of religiousness, and its relation to parent and child mental health variables

    Open Access•Joseph M Strayhorn, Carla S Weidman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1990•References: 21

A modification of a scale to measure religiousness, first published by Kauffman (1979), was constructed and administered to a sample of parents of Head Start children; respondents were predominantly low-income, Black mothers of the enrolled children. The scale was administered on two test occasions, along with measures of parent and child psychological variables. Factor analysis revealed two factors corresponding to „private”︁ and „public”︁use of…

  • A diagnostic axis relevant to psychotherapy and preventive mental health

    Joseph M Strayhorn•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1983•References: 22

Concepts commonly useful to therapists in deciding upon the direction of psychotherapy are collated into a diagnostic axis, using the language of skills. It is argued that this skills axis has more therapeutic relevance than a symptom-cluster scheme, is less pejorative than personality disorder labels, lends itself to scientific grounding, would promote clarity in outcome research, and could be usefully applied to preventive mental health
