  • Reflections by inner-city drug users on a Buddhist-based spirituality-focused therapy

Mark Beitel, Marla Genova et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2007

A manual-guided, spirituality-focused intervention--spiritual self-schema (3-S) therapy--for the treatment of addiction and HIV-risk behavior was developed as part of a Stage I behavioral therapies development project. It is theoretically grounded in cognitive and Buddhist psychologies and may be suitable for individuals of diverse faiths. The therapy development process began with focus groups to assess addicted clients' perceived need for a spi…

  • Making the shift from ‘addict self ’ to ‘spiritual self ’

S Kelly Avants, Mark Beitel et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2005

A manual-guided intervention, Spiritual Self-Schema (3-S) therapy, for the treatment of addiction and HIV risk behavior is being developed in a Stage I behavioral therapies development project. 3-S therapy integrates a cognitive model of self with a non-sectarian Buddhist framework suitable for people of all faiths. Data are presented on a sample of 29 cocaine- and opioid-dependent clients. Seventy-nine percent completed the 8-week intervention. …

  • Acupuncture and Spirituality-Focused Group Therapy for the Treatment of HIV-Positive Drug Users

Arthur Margolin, S Kelly Avants et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2005

In this study, 40 HIV-seropositive, cocaine abusing, methadone maintained drug users were randomized to either the standard five-needle National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) protocol or to a reduced, escalating dose (one to three needle) protocol. In addition to receiving their assigned acupuncture treatments, the last 15 patients also received a spirituality-focused group therapy intervention. Acupuncture treatments were offered…

  • Intervening Effectively with Drug Abusers Infected with HIV

Michael D Miller, Michael Copenhaver et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2003

HIV-positive drug users play a significant role in the transmission of HIV infection. Substance abuse treatment programs can potentially reduce transmission by providing HIV preventive interventions to these individuals. However, there is growing evidence suggesting that, due to a variety of factors, a substantial proportion of HIV-positive drug users may enter addiction treatment with some degree of cognitive impairment in domains that could imp…

  • Spiritual Self-Schema Therapy, Drug Abuse, and HIV

David Marcotte, S Kelly Avants et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2003

This case report describes the use of Spiritual Self-Schema (3-S) therapy in the treatment of an HIV-positive inner-city drug user maintained on methadone and referred for additional treatment due to unremitting cocaine use. 3-S therapy is a manual-guided intervention based on cognitive self-schema theory. Its goal is to help the patient create, elaborate, and make accessible a cognitive schema--the "spiritual" self-schema-that is incompatible wi…

  • Spiritual and Religious Support in Recovery from Addiction Among HIV-Positive Injection Drug Users

S Kelly Avants, Lara A Warburton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•2001

The current study examined the association between support and comfort derived from religion or spirituality and abstinence from illicit drugs in a sample of 43 HIV-positive injection drug users entering a methadone maintenance program. Patients with high ratings of perceived spiritual or religious support were abstinent from illicit drugs significantly longer during the first six months of methadone maintenance than were patients with lower rati…

  • Motivational Factors in Cocaine Pharmacotherapy Trials with Methadone-Maintained Patients

Arthur Margolin, S Kelly Avants et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1997

Phamacotherapy trials for cocaine abuse among methadone-maintained patients have typically reported negative findings as well as high rates of cocaine use during the trial. The contribution of motivational factors to these results is a potentially important, under investigated area. This article points out that some methadone-maintained patients may enter a trial for cocaine abuse with little desire for treatment, motivated primarily to continue …

  • Pemoline for the Treatment of Cocaine Dependence in Methadone-Maintained Patients

Arthur Margolin, S Kelly Avants et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1996

The authors conducted an open-label trial of pemoline, a dopaminergic CNS stimulant, for the treatment of cocaine addiction in methadone-maintained patients. Ten patients who met DSM-III-R criteria for cocaine dependence participated in an eight-week study. Findings showed that 50% of patients were discontinued from the study due to complaints of side-effects. Patients who completed treatment submitted 79% positive urine toxicology screens over t…

  • Cocaine Abuse in Methadone Maintenance Programs

S Kelly Avants, Arthur Margolin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1994

Cocaine abuse by methadone-maintained patients threatens to undermine the success of methadone programs by sustaining a drug-abusing lifestyle as well as contributing to the spread of HIV. The search for a pharmacotherapeutic agent for the treatment of cocaine has met with limited success. The most promising results emerge when specific agents, such as desipramine, are matched appropriately to specific patient characteristics, such as depression …
