The therapeutic nursery as an aid in diagnosis of delayed language development
Although the presenting problem of children with delayed language development may be similar, longitudinal observation in a therapeutic nursery helps clarify the diverse etiological factors. Just how this is done is illustrated with three children, one whose delayed language was due to lack of auditory stimulation, one with schizophrenia, and one with structural damage to the central nervous system
Reading disability: Teaching through stimulation of deficit perceptual areas
A crossover experiment, using the method of stimulation of deficit perceptual areas, is designed to determine whether perception can be modified by training and whether increased accuracy of perception is reflected in improved reading achievement. The method itself is discussed in terms of historical and experimental antecedents. Experimental design, training procedures, and case materials are described
Specific reading disability: Follow-up studies
Twenty-four children with specific reading disability, originally studied and treated at the Bellevue Hospital Mental Hygiene Clinic between 1949 and 1951, were reexamined as young adults between 1961 and 1962 with the battery of tests given to them ten to 12 years before. Their specific perceptual problems and evidence of lack of clear- out cerebral dominance persists, although in less severe form. Those patients who as children had neurological…
