Increasing Sustained Viral Suppression Among Youth Living with HIV
PrEP Disparities Among Transgender Feminine, Transgender Masculine, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive Youth and Young Adults in the United States
This study assessed disparities in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among transgender and gender expansive youth and young adults (N = 477) between 15 and 24 years old in the CARES (ATN 149) and TechStep (ATN 160) study protocols within the National Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN). Structural equation modeling was used to test mediation pathways between gender identity and PrEP uptake among the full sample a…
Online Peer Support for Youth at Higher Risk of or Living with HIV
With the rise of technology-based interventions for HIV risk reduction among adolescents, research is needed to assess how youth participate in these strategies. We used qualitative content analysis to examine youth's posts in an online peer support intervention through the Adolescent Trials Network (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03134833, registered May 1, 2017) for youth at higher risk of or living with HIV. We analyzed 308 posts across 85 conversation…
Strategies to Facilitate Service Utilization Among Youth at Risk for HIV
Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) are vulnerable to acquiring HIV and need HIV prevention and health services, but may have competing needs. A prior analysis found that PrEP use reports increased in a combination intervention study arm with coaching, peer support, and automated text-messages. This paper examines ancillary support and healthcare services utilization as secondary intervention objectives. SGMY (N = 895, 40% Black, 29% Latino) …

Activity Space Assessments to Investigate Neighborhood Exposure to Racism-Related Stress and Related Substance Use Among Young Black Men
Objectives. To use activity space assessments to investigate neighborhood exposures that may heighten young Black men’s vulnerability to substance use and misuse. Methods. We surveyed young Black men in New Haven, Connecticut in 2019 on the locations (activity spaces) they traveled to in a typical week and their experiences of racism and any alcohol and cannabis use at each location. Results. A total of 112 young Black men (mean age = 23.57 years…
Mentoring to Dismantle Structural Racism
Community engagement to improve access to healthcare
In Los Angeles and Chicago, transgender community engagement guided implementation processes and led to critical insights regarding specific, local barriers to healthcare. The steering committee itself represented an important vehicle for individual-, organizational-, and community-level relationship and capacity building. This comparative case study highlights key adaptations of EPIS toward the formation of an implementation science framework fo…
Pre-displacement stressors, psychological morbidity, and PTSD symptoms among displaced women by Boko-Haram in North-East Nigeria
We utilised a cross-sectional survey design to examine the moderating roles of dimensional psychological capital (PsyCap) and pre-displacement stressors on the relationship between psychological morbidity and severity of PTSD symptoms among internally displaced (IDP) women from terrorist activity. Participants were 631 IDP women (mean age = 31.18 years, SD = 8.59 years) displaced by Boko Haram insurgents in North-East Nigeria. Structural equation…
Mentoring the mentors of students from diverse backgrounds for research
This article defines and discusses 6 beliefs, attitudes, and practices that can erode or undermine self-esteem and self confidence in student-scholars from underrepresented and marginalized groups in academic settings. Specifically, the beliefs and practices are reactions to implicit bias, color blindness, imposter syndrome, internalized racism, stereotype threat, and code-switching. Mentors need to know how to discuss these reactions because the…
“I’m not homeless, I’m houseless”
Little is known about homeless young people’s identification of being homeless and how that identity may or may not be associated with service utilization. This study of 444 homeless young people attending Los Angeles area drop-in centers explores the associations of demographic characteristics, homelessness characteristics, negative lifetime experiences, mental health symptoms, technology use, and past month service utilization with identifying …

Who is doing well? A typology of newly homeless adolescents
There is growing evidence to support developing new typologies for homeless adolescents. Current typologies focus on the risks associated with being homeless, with less consideration of the positive attributes of homeless adolescents. The authors examined both risk and protective factors in a sample of newly homeless adolescents. Using cluster analysis techniques, they identified three distinct clusters of newly homeless adolescents: those who ar…
