  • The Association of Frequency of Worry About Financial Debt With Substance Use Among Adults in Ontario, Canada

    Yeshambel T Nigatu, Tara Elton‐Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2024

BACKGROUND: Financial debt and associated stress might increase the risk of substance use problems or exacerbate existing ones. Little evidence is available about the degree of debt stress and its association with substance use. The objective of this study was to examine the associations of the frequency of worry about debt with heavy episodic drinking (HED), daily smoking, e-cigarette use, and cannabis use in the past 30 days. METHODS: Data were…

Open Access•Jared C Wootten, Rebecca Rodrigues et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2024

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is associated with the onset and persistence of psychotic disorders. Evidence suggests that accessibility of substances is associated with an increased risk of use-related harms. We sought to examine the effect of residing in proximity to non-medical cannabis retailers on the prevalence of health service use for psychosis. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using linked health administrative data, and used geospati…

  • Do sociodemographic risk profiles for adolescents engaging in weekly e-cigarette, cigarette, and dual product use differ

Open Access•Kate Battista, Katelyn Battista et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study used a novel modelling approach (CART) to identify combinations of sociodemographic characteristics that profile high-risk groups for exclusive e-cigarette and dual-product use. Unique risk profiles were identified, suggesting that e-cigarettes are attracting new demographics of adolescents who have not previously been considered as high-risk for traditional cigarette use

  • Overpoliced and Underrepresented: Perspectives on Cannabis Legalization From Members of Racialized Communities in Canada

    Open Access•Jessica L Wiese, Tara Marie Watson et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 42

Historically, overpolicing of some racialized and Indigenous groups in Canada has resulted in unequal application of drug laws contributing to disproportionate rates of charges and convictions in these populations. Criminal records severely and negatively impact an individual’s life and can perpetuate cycles of poverty and socioeconomic disadvantage. On October 17, 2018, Canada legalized cannabis production, distribution, sale, and possession for…

  • Impact of China National Tobacco Company’s ‘Premiumization’ Strategy: Longitudinal findings from the ITC China Surveys (2006–2015)

Steve S Xu, Shannon Gravely et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2018

Our findings demonstrate that the rising trend in Chinese smokers' choice of 'less harmful', 'higher quality' and 'affordable' cigarettes, particularly PBCs, is likely due to CNTC's aggressive marketing strategies. Strong tobacco control policies that prohibit CNTC's marketing activities are critical in order to dispel erroneous beliefs that sustain continued smoking in China, where the global tobacco epidemic is exerting its greatest toll

  • Understanding the impact of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act on hospitality establishments' outdoor environments: A survey of restaurants and bars

Ryan David Kennedy, Tara Elton‐Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

The SFOA resulted in greater protection from outdoor secondhand smoke; however, most patios still permitted smoking. Half of the venues that complied with the SFOA by going smoke-free did so involuntarily because of structural and/or financial limitations. The majority of venue operators preferred to permit smoking on their patios, and only made their patios smoke-free when they were required to do so by law

  • Quitting smoking in China: Findings from the ITC China Survey

    Open Access•Yuan Jiang, Tara Elton‐Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

These findings demonstrate the need to: (1) increase awareness of the dangers of smoking; (2) provide cessation support for smokers; (3) have physicians encourage smokers to quit; (4) denormalise tobacco use so that smokers feel pressured to quit; (5) implement smoke-free laws to encourage quitting; (6) develop stronger warning labels about the specific dangers of smoking and provide resources for obtaining further cessation assistance; and (7) i…

  • Use of less expensive cigarettes in six cities in China: Findings from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) China Survey

Open Access•Qiang Li, Andrew Hyland et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

Measures need to be taken to minimise the price differential among cigarette brands and to increase smokers' health knowledge, which may in turn increase their intentions to quit

  • Cigarettes sold in China: Design, emissions and metals

    Open Access•Richard J O’connor, Qiang Li et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

Results suggest that cigarettes in China increasingly resemble those sold in Western countries, but with tobacco containing higher levels of heavy metals. As CNTC looks to export its product around the world, independent surveillance of tobacco product characteristics, including tobacco blend characteristics, will become increasingly important

  • Individual-level factors associated with intentions to quit smoking among adult smokers in six cities of China: Findings from the ITC China Survey

Guoze Feng, Yuan Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

The determinants of quit intentions among smokers in China are fairly similar to those found among smokers in Western countries, despite the fact that interest in quitting is considerably lower among Chinese smokers. Identifying the determinants of quit intentions provides possibilities for shaping effective policies and programs for increasing quitting among smokers in China

  • Socioeconomic Differences in the Effectiveness of the Removal of the “Light” Descriptor on Cigarette Packs: Findings from the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Thailand Survey

Open Access•Mohammad Siahpush, Ron Borland et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

Many smokers incorrectly believe that "light" cigarettes are less harmful than regular cigarettes. To address this problem, many countries have banned "light" or "mild" brand descriptors on cigarette packs. Our objective was to assess whether beliefs about "light" cigarettes changed following the 2007 removal of these brand descriptors in Thailand and, if a change occurred, the extent to which it differed by socioeconomic status. Data were from w…

  • The importance of the belief that “light” cigarettes are smoother in misperceptions of the harmfulness of “light” cigarettes in the Republic of Korea: A nationally representative cohort study

    Open Access•Annika C Green, Geoffrey T Fong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

The strong association between the belief that "light" cigarettes are smoother on the throat and chest and the belief that "light" cigarettes are less harmful, which is consistent with previous research, provides further evidence of the need to not only ban "light" descriptors, but also prohibit cigarette design and packaging features that contribute to the perception of smoothness

  • The lower effectiveness of text-only health warnings in China compared to pictorial warnings in Malaysia: Findings from the ITC project

    Open Access•Zejun Li, Tara Elton‐Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

The findings indicate that the Chinese HWLs are noticed by a minority of non-smokers and that non-smokers strongly support strengthening the Chinese warning labels with more health information and pictures. Additionally, because the HWLs are noticed more often by non-smokers with a smoking spouse/partner, HWLs could be used to communicate the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke exposure to non-smokers
