The Evolution of Improvisation in Early Jazz Piano Pedagogy
This article engages the history of jazz theory, investigating how the concept of improvisation evolved pedagogically in jazz piano methods from ragtime to the early 1930s.Early jazz theory publications did not teach improvisation as currently conceived, but rather how to play popular songs as songs with their melodies recognizable as such.In the 1910s, this primarily meant how to "rag" melodies, and then, in the 1920s, how to insert "breaks," or…
Trackintel
Over the past decade, scientific studies have used the growing availability of large tracking datasets to enhance our understanding of human mobility behavior. However, so far data processing pipelines for the varying data collection methods are not standardized and consequently limit the reproducibility, comparability, and transferability of methods and results in quantitative human mobility analysis. This paper presents Trackintel, an open-sour…
Graph-based mobility profiling
The decarbonization of the transport system requires a better understanding of human mobility behavior to optimally plan and evaluate sustainable transport options (such as Mobility as a Service). Current analysis frameworks often rely on specific datasets or data-specific assumptions and hence are difficult to generalize to other datasets or studies. In this work, we present a workflow to identify groups of users with similar mobility behavior t…
On the Tonic Added-Sixth Chord in Jazz
This article investigates the major-mode tonic added-sixth chord in jazz, a characteristic harmony well established by the 1930s. Beginning around 1930, routine use of the tonic added-sixth chord established it as a “dialect” distinct from the triadic dialect of early jazz, ragtime, and the various styles and genres antecedent to jazz. The article begins with an examination of how ".fn_scaledegree(6)."/I can be understood as both “dependent” on "…

Four Studies of Charlie Parker's Compositional Processes
Charlie Parker has been much appreciated as an improviser, but he was also an important jazz composer, a topic yet to be studied in depth. Parker's compositions offer insight into his total musicianship as well as provide a summary of early bebop style. Because he left no working manuscripts, we cannot examine his compositions evolving on paper. We do possess occasional single parts for trumpet or alto saxophone of pieces written for recording se…

"Charlie Parker and "Honeysuckle Rose
One of the most intriguing items in the Charlie Parker discography is his first recording, a medley of "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Body and Soul" performed as an alto saxophone solo. Probably recorded in 1940, "Honeysuckle Rose" is unique: a multichorus solo from early in his career. For the first time we hear Parker confronting the problem of embedding a well-known swing standard inside the personal network of improvisational formulas necessary for …

Christianity and Hellenism
Horaceâ s celebrated remark, â Grecia capta ferum victorem cepitâ (â Greece, once captured, took her barbarous captor captiveâ ), was made in relation to the influence of Greek culture (especially poetry) on the civilization of Rome. Rome had come to dominate Greece militarily in the second century BC and had absorbed the country into its own political sphere of influence, making it a Roman province. But culturally Greeceâ s influence on Rome was…
Individuation and paideia
This article attempts to discover an important historical precedent for the concept of individuation in the idea of paideia , which today, mistakenly, is often understood to have been simply the form of ‘education’ practised in ancient Greece. Paideia , however, was not limited to the instruction of youth and was based on no fixed programmes. It was conceived as continuing throughout the life of the individual, and as a development of natural, in…
