  • Long-Term Effects of Repealing the National Maximum Speed Limit in the United States

Lee S Friedman, Donald Hedeker et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•References: 26

Objectives. We examined the long-term effects of the 1995 repeal of federal speed limit controls on road fatalities and injuries in fatal crashes. Methods. We used a Poisson mixed-regression model to assess changes in the number of fatalities and injuries in fatal crashes between 1995 and 2005 on rural interstates, where all US states have raised speed limits since the repeal, as well as on urban interstates and noninterstate roads, where many st…

  • Raised Speed Limits, Speed Spillover, Case-Fatality Rates, and Road Deaths in Israel

Elihu D Richter, Paul Barach et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•References: 22

Objectives. We assessed the 5-year, nationwide impact on road deaths of the raise in the speed limit (November 1, 1993) on 3 major interurban highways in Israel from 90 to 100 kph. Methods. We compared before–after trends in deaths as well as case fatality—an outcome independent of exposure (defined as vehicle-kilometers traveled). Results. After the raise, speeds rose by 4.5%–9.1%. Over 5 years, there was a sustained increase in deaths (15%) and…

  • Environmental Asthma Intervention

    Elihu D Richter•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the January 2002 issue of the Journal, Kinney et al. report the difficulties they encountered in running a pilot intervention project to reduce asthmatic children's exposure to pests and associated allergens in New York City.1 They are to be commended for taking on such a difficult task. I suggest that a more comprehensive approach is needed and that there are some lessons to be learned from the past. More than 30 years ago, a coalition of ten…

Open Access•Jaime Posada, J Gonzalez Posada et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2000

We report data on the distribution and determinants of road deaths and injuries for all victims in Colombia, with the aim of defining targets and priorities for highway death prevention in that country and other rapidly urbanizing nations. Using information from Colombia's Fund for the Prevention of Road Injury and the national death registry, we studied data on deaths and injuries from 1991 to 1995 for the nation as a whole and for the country's…

  • Prevention through pre-review in occupational health and safety

    Elihu D Richter, D Kretzmer•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1980

Occupational health problems have needlessly been produced at many worksites as a consequence of their not having been anticipated during design and construction. Pre-review may be an effective and efficient mechanism for preventive intervention in occupational health and safety. Legal and administrative precedents are cited from the United States and other countries. Proposals are presented, with Israel as an example, which aim to implement the …
