Migration and admixture in the Pacific
THE HUMAN LEUKOCYTE ANTIGEN (HLA) SYSTEM IS A HIGHLY INFORMATIVE genetic complex that provides a new and powerful tool for studying the ancestral relationships between populations. The HLA gene frequency distributions in 17 populations are here examined for the light they throw on current theories regarding the peopling of the Pacific. It is generally accepted that the earliest arrivals in Sahul land, the single continent of Australia-New Guinea,…
Linguistic and genetic differentiation in New Guinea
HLA antigens in four Pacific populations with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
HLA antigen distributions in persons with normal and abnormal glucose tolerance were compared in four Pacific populations. The populations included Melanesians from the Fijian Islands, Loyalty Islands and mainland New Caledonia and Polynesians from the Wallis Islands. HLA-DR results are provided for the first time for Pacific groups. In Polynesians, HLA-B22 was increased in frequency in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and al…
The genetics of leprosy
Population and family distributions of leprosy in the Bogia Subprovince of Papua New Guinea have been examined for evidence of inherited susceptibility to the disease. Evidence for multigenic inheritance of leprosy severity is provided by the restriction of pleiotropy with red-cell enzyme 6PGD phenotypes to a single clinical form of leprosy and by the superior fit of pedigree data to a multifactorial, rather than single-gene model, of inheritance…
The relationship between socioeconomic status and health in two Papua New Guinean populations
Body composition changes during lactation in a New Guinea population
Some body composition changes during lactation in women of Karkar Island, Papua New Guinea, suggest that body fat reserves, measured by changes in weight, diminish during the course of lactation and that subcutaneous fat reserves diminish with parity. The data are discussed in terms of the possible nutritional control of fertility of women in a subsistence economy
