Physical Education Teacher Training Within Juvenile Detention Centers
In today's rapidly evolving educational environment, there is a pressing need to train teachers to respond to the increasingly diverse needs of students. Although physical education teacher education (PETE) programs across the country offer a wide variety of early field experiences for students, very few provide opportunities to work with currently incarcerated youths. One such partnership exists at Northern Illinois University (NIU), with a coll…
An investigation of space and space-time clustering in a large sample of infants with neural tube defects born in Cardiff
Altogether 406 infants with neural tube defects born in Cardiff between 1956-71 were investigated for evidence of space-time clustering and 100 similarly affected infants, together with matched controls born in Cardiff between 1964-66 were investigated for evidence of spatial clustering. No evidence of excessive prevalence in either dimension was observed
Neural tube defects in a country town
Eighteen infants with neural tube defects occurring in 979 births over five years in a small Wiltshire town were investigated for evidence of spatial epidemicity. Applying a method not used previously in the study of these defects, clustering was confirmed, a critical distance between cases of up to 100 metres giving a highly significant result (P = 0·001), and with one exception the observed number of pairs significantly exceeds the expected num…
Potato cultivation and storage in South Wales and its relation to neural tube malformation prevalence
The prevalence of neural tube malformations at birth is higher in the coalmining valleys of South Wales than anywhere else in England and Wales. In the eastern mining valleys of Glamorgan rates exceeded 1% of all births in the period 1964-66 (Richards, Roberts, and Lloyd, 1972). The preva lence in the coastal regions of South Wales is only half that in the mining valleys and this is not due to area differences in social class, parity, maternal ag…
Mortality from ischaemic heart disease--association with weather
A test for space clustering and its application to congenital limb defects in Cardiff
Several methods are currently available for investigation of low intensity space
Cyclic variations in date of last menstrual period of mothers of infants with congenital malformations in South Wales, 1964-66
In a review article on congenital malformations and season of birth, Bailar and Gurian (1965) stated that 'seasonal cycles in births of infants with certain malformations have been demonstrated beyond any reasonable doubt'. Recently, Wehrung and Hay (1970) have referred to the ambiguity of the term 'seasonal', and Hewitt et al. (1971) have pointed out that although a temporal pattern of behaviour may be demonstrated by an appropriate statistical …
