  • Postacute Care for Medicare Advantage Enrollees Who Switched to Traditional Medicare Compared With Those Who Remained in Medicare Advantage

Open Access•Peter J Huckfeldt, Victoria Shier et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2024

The findings of this cohort study indicate that after a change in retiree health benefits, most Ohio public retirees shifted from MA to TM and received more intensive postacute care with no significant change in measured short-term postdischarge outcomes. Future work should consider additional measures of postacute functional status over a longer follow-up period

  • Evaluation of the Completeness of Managed Care Data to Identify Cancer Diagnoses and Treatments for Patients in the Seer-Medicare Data

    Joan L Warren, Helen M Parsons et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2023•References: 5

BACKGROUND: The utility of codes on Medicare Advantage (MA) data to capture cancer diagnoses and treatment for cancer patients is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study compared cancer diagnoses and treatments on MA encounter data (MA data) with the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End-Results (SEER) data. SUBJECTS: Subjects were patients enrolled in either MA or Medicare fee-for-service (MFFS) when diagnosed with incident breast, colorectal, prostate, or…

We examine coverage changes associated with ACA implementation, comparing adults with and without a cancer history. METHODS: We included nonelderly adults from the 2012 to 2015 National Health Interview Survey. Using information on state Medicaid policies (2013), expans…

Survivorship care planning including written treatment summaries and follow-up care instructions may help reduce unmet information and service needs of AYA survivors. This study provides further evidence for the importance of survivorship care planning as a way to improve survivor outcomes.

  • Creating a National Provider Identifier (NPI) to Unique Physician Identification Number (Upin) Crosswalk for Medicare Data

    Helen M Parsons, Helen Parsons et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2017•References: 31

INTRODUCTION: Many health services researchers are interested in assessing long term, individual physician treatment patterns, particularly for cancer care. In 2007, Medicare changed the physician identifier used on billed services from the Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN) to the National Provider Identifier (NPI), precluding the ability to use Medicare claims data to evaluate individual physician treatment patterns across this trans…

  • Vaccination Interest and Trends in Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Uptake in Young Adult Women Aged 18 to 26 Years in the United States

Susanne Schmidt, Helen M Parsons et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 17

Objectives. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines have been approved since 2006, yet vaccination rates remain low. We investigated HPV vaccination trends, interest, and reasons for nonvaccination in young adult women. Methods. We used data from the 2008–2012 National Health Interview Survey to analyze HPV vaccine uptake trends (≥ 1 dose) in women aged 18 to 26 years. We used data from the 2008 and 2010 National Health Interview Survey to examine HP…

  • Complex Comorbidity Clusters in OEF/OIF Veterans

Mary Jo Pugh, Mary Jo V Pugh et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2014•References: 9

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research on US Veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq [Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF)] has described the polytrauma clinical triad (PCT): traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and pain. Extant research has not explored comorbidity clusters in this population more broadly, particularly co-occurring chronic diseases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was…

  • Hospital Characteristics Associated With Maintenance or Improvement of Guideline-recommended Lymph Node Evaluation for Colon Cancer

    Helen M Parsons, Helen Parsons et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2013•References: 9

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, surgical practice organizations have recommended the identification of ≥12 lymph nodes from surgically treated colon cancer patients as an indicator of quality performance for adequate staging; however, studies suggest that significant variation exists among hospitals in their level of adherence to this recommendation. We examined hospital-level factors that were associated with institutional improvement or mai…

  • Improving Service Delivery in a County Health Department WIC Clinic

Debra Thingstad Boe, William T Riley et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Local public health agencies are challenged to continually improve service delivery, yet they frequently operate with constrained resources. Quality improvement methods and techniques such as statistical process control are commonly used in other industries, and they have recently been proposed as a means of improving service delivery and performance in public health settings. We analyzed a quality improvement project undertaken at a local Specia…
