  • Urban–Rural Differences in Mental and Physical Health among Primary Care Patients with Multiple Chronic Conditions

Open Access•Levi N Bonnell, Jessica Clifton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Among adults with demonstrated access to care and multiple diagnosed chronic conditions, rural residents had better mental health and functional capacity than their urban counterparts. This finding is not consistent with prior research documenting rural health disparities and should be confirmed

  • The use of insulin declines as patients live farther from their source of care

Open Access•Benjamin Littenberg, Kaitlin Strauss et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Adults with type 2 diabetes who live farther from their source of primary care are significantly less likely to use insulin. This association is not due to confounding by age, sex, race, education, income, health insurance, body mass index, duration of diabetes, use of oral agents, glycemic control, or frequency of care, and may be responsible for the poorer physiologic control noted among patients with greater travel burdens

  • Diabetes Decision Support

Charles D MacLean, Benjamin Littenberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Interventions that have proven effective in the management of chronic illness have often been difficult to establish in widespread practice. The Chronic Care Model provides a framework for implementing interventions, but it is expensive and difficult to implement. We developed a decision support system based on this model to improve the care of adults who have diabetes and receive primary care in Vermont or adjacent New York. The Vermont Diabetes…

Vic Hasselblad, Frederick Mosteller et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1995

The United States Agency for Health Care Policy and Research brought together representatives from each of the Patient Outcomes Research Teams (PORTs) as the Inter-PORT Meta-Analysis Work Group. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a wide range of problems the panel had encountered in the area of meta-analysis. Several actual problems were presented, and tentative solutions to those problems were given. The PORTs had to consider issues such …

  • Improving Physician Compliance With Preventive Medicine Guidelines

David I Cohen, Benjamin Littenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1982

Similar general medical outpatient clinics with randomly assigned patients were used to evaluate the effectiveness of a program that was to increase house staff compliance with preventive medicine guidelines. Two clinics were designated experimental and two served as controls. In the experimental clinics, age-specific checklists of all recommended preventive procedures (drawn from the Canadian Task Force report on The Periodic Health Examination …

  • Does Cost Information Availability Reduce Physician Test Usage

    David I Cohen, Paul K Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1982

Four similar teams of physicians associated with similar inpatient units and randomly assigned patients were used to study the effect of providing physicians with cost information about their use of lab tests and x-rays. Two teams received information about lab test costs, and two teams received x-ray test costs. Test usage fell during the experimental conditions and continued to fall after the experimental period ended in teams in which there wa…
