  • Association Between New 340B Program Participation and Commercial Insurance Spending on Outpatient Biologic Oncology Drugs

    Open Access•Jessica Chang, Pinar Karaca-Mandic et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2023

In this cohort study, new 340B participation was associated with statistically significant higher oncological drug episode spending compared with nonparticipants after changes in 340B inclusion rules in 2010. These findings raise questions about unintended consequences of the 340B program on drug spending from the commercially insured population

  • Uptake of Biosimilar Among Privately Insured Patients Undergoing Infliximab Treatment

    Jessica Chang, Pinar Karaca-Mandic et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2023•References: 10

BACKGROUND: Recent literature has found rapid uptake of short-acting filgrastim biosimilars but slower uptake of other biosimilars, such as infliximab, in both Medicare and privately insured enrollees. OBJECTIVES: To describe patient, provider, and health plan characteristics associated with a switch to biosimilar among existing infliximab patients. RESEARCH DESIGN: We constructed a retrospective panel dataset of patients undergoing active inflix…

  • Changes in all-cause and cause-specific mortality during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic in Minnesota

    Open Access•Rozalina G Mccoy, Ronna L Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a 17% increase in the death rate in Minnesota relative to 2018-2019, driven by both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 causes. As the COVID-19 pandemic enters its third year, it is imperative to examine and address the factors contributing to excess mortality in the short-term and monitor for additional morbidity and mortality in the years to come

  • Response to Propoxyphene Market Withdrawal

    Molly M Jeffery, Nancy E Morden et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2020•References: 32

OBJECTIVE: Experts cautioned that patients affected by the November 2010 withdrawal of the opioid analgesic propoxyphene might receive riskier prescriptions. To explore this, we compared drug receipts and outcomes among propoxyphene users before and aftermarket withdrawal. STUDY DESIGN: Using OptumLabs data, we studied 3 populations: commercial, Medicare Advantage (MA) aged (age 65+ y) and MA disabled (age below 65 y) enrollees. The exposed enrol…

  • The Effectiveness of a Health Promotion Program After 3 Years

    John A Nyman, Jean Abraham et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2012•References: 6

BACKGROUND: Health promotion programs for the workplace are often sold to employers with the promise that they will pay for themselves with lowered health care expenditures and reduced absenteeism. In a recent review of the literature, it was noted that analysts often caution not to expect a positive return on investment until the third year of operation. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates whether a positive return on investment was generated in …
