Quality of Antiepileptic Treatment Among Older Medicare Beneficiaries With Epilepsy
BACKGROUND: Enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs (EI-AEDs) are not recommended for older adults with epilepsy. Quality Indicator for Epilepsy Treatment 9 (QUIET-9) states that new patients should not receive EI-AEDs as first line of treatment. In light of reported racial/ethnic disparities in epilepsy care, we investigated EI-AED use and QUIET-9 concordance across major racial/ethnic groups of Medicare beneficiaries. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective…
Supplementing online surveys with a mailed option to reduce bias and improve response rate
Even in an era of increasingly electronic communication by dentists, not including a paper option when conducting surveys can result in overestimation of the prevalence of key dental practice characteristics
Use of online sources of information by dental practitioners
A relatively small proportion of dental practitioners use information from online sources for practice guidance. Variation exists regarding practitioners' use of online source resources and how they rate the value of offline information sources for practice guidance
Diagnostic Tests and Neurology Care for Medicare Beneficiaries With Seizures
BACKGROUND: Seizures and epilepsy are common in older adults especially in some minorities. Despite the importance of medical care to maximize seizure control, little is known about its quality across racial groups. One indicator of quality care is the receipt of electroencephalograms (EEG), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) or computer tomography scans (CTs) after a first seizure. Neurologists' care is also important, given associated diagno…

Delayed access to HIV diagnosis and care
HIV diagnosis and presentation to appropriate medical care during early stages of disease has substantial clinical and public health benefits. However, a large proportion of HIV-infected Americans experience diagnosis and treatment related delays. Prior research evaluating barriers to early HIV diagnosis and care presentation have been published primarily from large East and West coast urban centers. Therefore, predictors of delayed presentation …
Migration patterns following HIV diagnosis among adults residing in the nonurban Deep South
Health care needs of those infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and subsequent transmission dynamics are altered by migration after infection. We interviewed 760 HIV-infected persons attending HIV-specialty clinics living in non-urban Alabama and Mississippi to ascertain the likely geographic origins of their infections, determine their post-HIV diagnosis mobility, and identify predictors of this mobility. Most subjects (81%) were…
Do Local Opinion Leaders Augment Hospital Quality Improvement Efforts
BACKGROUND: The influence of an opinion leader intervention on adherence to Unstable Angina (UA) guidelines compared with a traditional quality improvement model was investigated. RESEARCH DESIGN: A group-randomized controlled trial with 2210 patients from 21 hospitals was designed. There were three intervention arms: (1) no intervention (NI); (2) a traditional Health Care Quality Improvement Program (HCQIP); and (3) a physician opinion leader in…
Patient-perceived barriers to antiretroviral adherence
New antiretroviral (ARV) regimens require strict adherence if optimal suppression of HIV is to be maintained. This study is a theory-based examination of racial differences in patient-perceived barriers and reported ARV adherence. Participants (N=149) completed the Patient Medication Adherence Questionnaire (PMAQ), measuring adherence and perceived barriers to adherence. Adherence was defined as a self-report of 100% adherence in the past four we…
