  • Medieval Islamic Europe

Open Access•Eduardo Manzano Moreno, Eneko López Martínez de Marigorta•CHAPTER•The Cambridge Urban History of…•2025

In the Middle Ages, Islamic Iberia was home to one of the largest urban networks in Europe, while Sicily saw the exponential growth of cities like Palermo and Syracuse after the Arab conquest in the ninth century. Islamic cities in Iberia and Sicily were not only landmarks of an unprecedented and early economic expansion, they also bear witness to a number of institutional characteristics and forms of urban planning that need to be considered by …

  • The Early Islamization of the Urban Topography of Cordoba

    Eduardo Manzano Moreno•ARTICLE•Arabica•2025

This article aims to explain the early urban transformations of Islamic Cordoba. It is based on the hypothesis that the urban landmarks that are mentioned in the accounts of the conquest of the city were conflicting elements at the time when these accounts were composed. From this perspective, the textual and archaeological data that are recognisable in the city’s topography are analysed to demonstrate that the city only began to undergo signific…

The Umayyad amirs and caliphs of al-Andalus had as their permanent residence a qaṣr or Alcázar within the madīna of Cordoba, opposite the main mosque. Very few remains are left of this palatial complex, which sources do not describe in too much detail. However, these sources consistently mention the existence of a cemetery within the walls of this Alcázar in which all Umayyad rulers were buried. This cemetery was called rawḍa . The existence of a…

  • Muslim Spain Reconsidered. From 711 to 1502 By Richard Hitchcock

Eduardo Manzano Moreno, Eduardo Manzano•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2015

A book that intends to be a ‘reconsideration’ of Muslim Spain may be expected to include new ideas and debates from the latest research on the field, or from the most outstanding contributions by recent scholarship. This does not seem to be the opinion of Richard Hitchcock, who blatantly states in this book’s ‘Foreword’ that he has often used nineteenth century and pre-1970 works or editions of sources not as a result of ‘a conscious decision’, ‘…
