What do parents think about the quality and safety of care provided by hospitals to children and young people with an intellectual disability? A qualitative study using thematic analysis
OBJECTIVES: Children with intellectual disability experience patient safety issues resulting in poor care experiences and health outcomes. This study sought to identify patient safety issues that pertain to children aged 0-16 years with intellectual disability admitted to two tertiary state-wide children's hospitals and a children's palliative care centre; to describe and understand these factors to modify the Australian Patient Safety Education …
How do health services engage culturally and linguistically diverse consumers? An analysis of consumer engagement frameworks in Australia
BACKGROUND: Engagement frameworks provide the conceptual structure for consumer engagement in healthcare decision making, but the level to which these frameworks support culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) consumer engagement is not known. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate how consumer engagement is conceptualised and operationalized and to determine the implications of current consumer engagement frameworks for engagement with …

Factors influencing undernutrition among children under 5 years from cocoa-growing communities in Bougainville
Half the children under the age of 5 years in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are undernourished, more than double the global average with rural areas disproportionately affected. This study examines factors associated with stunting, wasting and underweight in cocoa growers’ children (

BACKGROUND: In the context of an effective consumer engagement framework, there is potential for health-care delivery to be safer. Consumers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds may experience several barriers when trying to engage about their health care, and they are not acknowledged sufficiently in contemporary strategies to facilitate patient engagement. METHODS: Four focus group discussions were facilitated by biling…
Implementing a One Health village volunteer programme in West Sulawesi, Indonesia
A pilot village volunteer programme (VVP) was implemented to produce new knowledge about the extent to which 24 trained village volunteers, taking an integrated One Health approach, could assist their communities by disseminating information on better agricultural and health practices. Just prior to the six-month pilot, the volunteers were mentored in a four-day training programme by local agricultural extension and public health experts. On retu…
What is the role of cultural competence in ethnic minority consumer engagement? An analysis in community healthcare
Our findings indicate that cultural competence and effective consumer engagement are closely linked in ethnic minority populations. Embedding cultural competence as a health system, service and professional capability is therefore critical to ensure equitable healthcare quality for consumers from all ethnic backgrounds
Health complaints and practitioner regulation
This article reviews the objectives pursued by health complaints entities (HCEs), how they mesh with bodies concerned with the regulation of health practitioners, and how these functions map against those of administrative review and theories of consumer accountability. We show that HCEs pursue multiple and diverse objectives shared by ‘hybrid’ institutions dealing with complex ‘polycentric’ disputes or dynamic circumstances, constituting one par…
National Registration of Health Practitioners
When the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) for health practitioners commenced in Australia in 2010, all jurisdictions joined the scheme for the registration and accreditation of health practitioners, but NSW retained its existing co‐regulatory complaint‐handling system. We sought to compare the new National notifications and the NSW complaints handling processes, as NSW has an independent investigative and prosecutory body to …
