Expanding Access to Addiction Medicine Specialist Care in Regional New South Wales, Australia Through Telehealth
Exploring the Utility and Appropriateness of Dose Thresholds for Issuing of Public Drug Alerts on High‐Dose MDMA
The Emergence of Novel Benzodiazepines in Australia, Evidence, Alerts, Clinical Management and Harm Reduction—A Narrative Review
The Need to Revitalise Drug Use Monitoring to Keep Pace With a More Dynamic, Digitally Enabled and Globally Connected Drug Market
Globalisation, developments in information technology, and social and demographic changes are profoundly impacting the modern world [1]. They have also resulted in an illicit drug market that is more dynamic, complex and globally connected [2]. Drug consumption patterns are rapidly changing, with synthetic drugs, controlled psychoactive substances and poly substance use all playing a greater role [3]. These developments are impacting both the nat…
Digital health interventions for people who use methamphetamine
DHIs show promise for people who use methamphetamine. While current evidence supports feasibility and acceptability, clinical outcomes are variable. High attrition and engagement challenges persist. Heterogeneity in study designs, measures, and reporting limits comparability. Future research should explore long-term outcomes, hybrid models, and co-designed approaches with a focus on gender and equity. With further development, DHIs may play a val…
Incorporating experiential reports provided by people who use drugs into drug-related early warning systems
Sex, Methamphetamine, and a Surge in Syphilis Among Women and Men Who Have Sex With Women
Globally rates of syphilis have been increasing since 1990 and, historically transmission has predominated among gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men (GBMSM). In the past decade, transmission has increased among women and men who have sex with women (MSW). This led Australia to declare syphilis a communicable disease of national significance in August 2025. In this commentary, we consider the implications of these developments on concepti…
Co-design of the Australian Prompt Response Network for a public-health focused intersectoral approach to information sharing on emerging drugs of concern
The rapid emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) and other emerging drugs of concern presents a significant global public health challenge, necessitating agile and interconnected drug information systems to identify and communicate risks. In Australia, responses have traditionally been localized, lacking a nationally coordinated system to rapidly share information about emerging drug threats. The National Center for Clinical Research on E…
Hydromorphone Hopes
Exploring experiences of talk therapies among gay and bisexual men seeking to reduce or abstain from using crystal methamphetamine in the context of chemsex
From environmental disasters to emerging drugs; a framework to understand, map and assess drug-related early warning systems
Unregulated drug markets are fast expanding and increasingly mediated through digital technologies. In a context of drug prohibition, the composition, potency and effects of substances are not guaranteed which can expose people to potentially fatal risks. There are pronounced concerns about the harms posed by substances such as synthetic opioids like fentanyl and nitazenes. The coordinated activities of stakeholders who attempt to identify, prepa…
Bridging the evidence and the politics
Supervised Injectable Opioid Treatment (SIOT) targets people experiencing opioid dependence who have not benefited from existing treatments. In this population, SIOT has been demonstrated to be efficacious and effective, yet this modality of treatment has only been taken up in a few countries. In this commentary we describe the socio-political context and history to the recent establishment of an implementation trial of injectable hydromorphone i…
Novel psychoactive substances in Australian emergency departments
Drug intelligence data generated in an acute harm setting such as the ED can provide early warning of drugs of concern circulating in the community, including NPS. This facilitates rapid community responses to reduce harm and inform subsequent public health responses
A multicentre case series of analytically confirmed gamma‐hydroxybutyrate intoxications in Western Australian emergency departments
Participant experiences in a pilot study for methamphetamine withdrawal treatment
The experiences of participants in this clinical trial can be distilled into four meta-themes: agency, caring-trust, safety, and communication. Participants spontaneously linked these experiences with a capacity to remain enrolled in the study. By considering the experiences of trial participants in clinical trial design, researchers can improve the experiences of future trial participants and facilitate their choice to remain enrolled in clinica…
Methamphetamine and emerging drugs of concern
Health and social characteristics of clients reporting amphetamine type substance use at entry to public alcohol and other drug services in New South Wales, Australia, 2016–2019
Pharmacological treatment for methamphetamine withdrawal
Phenobarbital to manage severe gamma‐hydroxybutyrate withdrawal
Psychosocial stress and methamphetamine use
A clinical research priority setting study for issues related to the use of methamphetamine and emerging drugs of concern in Australia
Controlling for pleasure and risk
Participants' near-ubiquitous experience of GHB overdose highlights ongoing education needs around overdose prevention. Efforts must target people new to GHB use who appeared particularly susceptible to overdose. Inconsistencies in understandings around GHB overdose, the perceived severity of overdose and the differences between GHB and its precursors GBL and 1,4-BD, highlight potential focus areas of future education responses. Further research …
Priorities for addressing substance use disorder in humanitarian settings
Results from this consultation process highlight existing gaps in knowledge related to the epidemiology and treatment of substance use disorders in humanitarian emergencies. Epidemiological, intervention, and implementation research as well as operational guidance are needed to fill these gaps and improve access to substance use treatment services in humanitarian settings
Profile and correlates of colorimetric reagent kit use among people who use ecstasy/MDMA and other illegal stimulants in Australia
Challenges in maintaining treatment services for people who use drugs during the Covid-19 pandemic
The impact of COVID-19 across health services, including treatment services for people who use drugs, is emerging but likely to have a high impact. Treatment services for people who use drugs provide essential treatment services including opiate agonist treatment and needle syringe programmes alongside other important treatment programmes across all substance types including withdrawal and counselling services. Drug and alcohol hospital consultat…

Public health, human rights and the harm reduction paradigm
Six rapid assessments of alcohol and other substance use in populations displaced by conflict
The six studies show the feasibility and value of conducting rapid assessments in displaced populations. One outcome of these studies is the development of a UNHCR/WHO field guide on rapid assessment of alcohol and other substance use among conflict-affected populations. More work is required on gathering population-based epidemiological data, and much more experience is required on delivering effective interventions. Presentation of these findin…
Risky alcohol use among reproductive-age men, not women, in Mae La refugee camp, Thailand, 2009
As a stigmatised behaviour, alcohol use is difficult to assess, particularly in the context of highly mobile adult male populations: the simple assessment methods here show that it is feasible to obtain adequate data for the purposes of intervention design. The data suggest that risky drinking is common and normalised among men, but that the population may have been partially protected from rapid rises in problem alcohol use observed in nation-wi…
Substance use among populations displaced by conflict
This paper reviews the literature on substance use among populations displaced by conflict. Of the 17 publications presenting primary data retained for review, all consider populations in or recovering from protracted conflict, the majority (10) in non‐camp settings. Most studies (10) offer prevalence estimates, suggesting that substance use (such as of alcohol, opiates, or minor tranquilizers) is common in some displaced settings. Five describe …
Alprazolam use and related harm among opioid substitution treatment clients – 12 months follow up after regulatory rescheduling
Substance Use and Sex Index (Susi)
Acceptability and preferences of point-of-care finger-stick whole-blood and venepuncture hepatitis C virus testing among people who inject drugs in Australia
