More support, less distress? ”
This study explores how providing assisted dying services affects the psychological distress of practitioners. It investigates the influence of professional norms that endorse such services within their field. Study 1 included veterinarians ( N = 137, 75.2% female, M age = 43.1 years, SD age = 12.7 years), and Study 2 health practitioner students ( N = 386, 71.0% female, M age = 21.0 years, SD age = 14.4 years). Using Latent Profile Analysis to Understand Health Practitioners’ Attitudes Toward Voluntary Assisted Dying
Prior work has documented considerable diversity among health practitioners regarding their support for voluntary assisted dying (VAD). We examined whether their attitudes are characterised by different combinations of personal support, normative support by other health practitioners, and whether they are predisposed to vicariously experience others' emotions (i.e., empathy). We also examined whether these profiles experienced different mental he…
Association of risky alcohol consumption and accreditation in the ‘Good Sports’ alcohol management programme
BACKGROUND: Involvement in community sports clubs is often associated with high levels of risky alcohol consumption; however, developing prevention-focused interventions in these settings can be complex. We examined the association of reduced risky alcohol consumption with the implementation of the Good Sports Programme (GSP)--a programme that accredits clubs in three stages, on the basis of their implementation of alcohol-related harm reduction …

Suicide
Recorded suicide overall has remained reasonably constant throughout the twentieth century in Australia, with changes occurring in its pattern of distribution amongst males. Increased frequency of suicide among young, rural, and Aboriginal males has led to speculation about the causes and calls for action from health care professionals. While the definition of suicide is still debated, suicide risk cannot be predicted accurately, and no useful cli…

Cognitive Processes Associated With Gambling Behaviour
Gambling behaviours can be pathological if positive response is extreme, but very little is known about the psychological precursors of pathological gambling in Australia. This study examined the relationships between self-reported gambling behaviours and scores on locus of control measures. The sample of 80 male and 75 female undergraduate students completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen and Levenson's multidimensional Locus of Control Scale. N…
Euthanasia
Most people would define euthanasia as the deliberate ending of a life by a second person, either by act or omission, on the basis of the second person's judgment about the quality of that life. Usually, the life that is terminated cannot be sustained without intensive inpatient medical care, and occasionally the life is believed to be so burdensome and distressing as to not be worth living. These two judgments broadly encompass medical euthanasi…
Sexual and gender harassment at university
The present study investigated women students' experience and perceptions of sexual and gender harassment on a university campus, using an adapted version of the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire. Although only 31.7% of students perceived that they had been sexually harassed, 91.3% reported at least one form of behaviour which could be perceived as sexually harassing: 88.1% from students and 53.2% from academics. Academics mainly engaged in gender…
Development and Psychometric Validation of the Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Well-Being Scale
Due to the growing interest in holistic health and well-being, the Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Well-being Scale was developed. This well-being scale has 30 items and incorporates mental, physical, and spiritual subscales. An initial set of items was developed and 186 university students responded to these. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted using principal components analysis with varimax rotation (N=100) to reduce the number of ite…
