The prevalence and impact of school segregation on education outcomes in Europe and beyond
This introductory contribution to this Special Issue elaborates on the link between school segregation and educational inequalities conceptually referencing some state of research. In a next step, a comparative research project on pioneering policies and practices to tackle educational inequalities is introduced, before the Special Issue and its contributions are presented
The long-term impact of socioeconomic school composition on inequalities in track placement and student achievement growth in Luxembourg
This study of educational inequalities concerns the long-term consequences of socioeconomic composition of schools in primary education (Grade 3) on students’ track placement and growth in academic achievement between Grade 3 and Grade 9. Using longitudinal data from the Luxembourg school monitoring program “Épreuves Standardisées” ( N = 3577), which includes matched records for students in Grade 3 (2013) and in Grade 9 (2017–2021), we conducted …
Exploring intersectional inequalities in students' sense of belonging in education across educational pathways and across educational contexts
Introduction The study investigated inequalities in the sense of belonging in education among students in primary, secondary and tertiary levels in various European, North American and Oceanian countries. Variation across different educational contexts was explored by examining example countries (Finland, Hungary and Ireland). An intersectional approach to inequalities was adopted; more specifically, an intersection between gender, migration and …
Resilience of the educational system in conditions of global social upheavals: The ratio of centralization and autonomy (Ukrainian experience for Europe)
The progression of achievement gap between immigrant and native-born students from primary to secondary education
This paper depicts the evolution of gaps in academic performance between native and immigrant background students as they progress from primary to secondary education. We study three cohorts of students in European and traditional English-speaking immigration countries using combinations of international assessment studies (PIRLS, TIMSS and PISA). To address the issue of comparability of test scores across surveys and over time, we exploit rank-b…
Do non-EU immigrants exhibit different patterns of participation in voluntary associations from those of natives and EU immigrants
The paper analyses the level of participation in voluntary associations (measured by levels of joining and volunteering) of third-country nationals (TCN) in Luxembourg. We compare two groups of TCN (Cape Verdeans, and ex-Yugoslavians) with native residents and selected groups of EU immigrants. We use propensity score matching to estimate intergroup differences, while accounting for selection bias. The largest differences are found between TCN and…
Max Haller in Collaboration with Anja Eder: Ethnic Stratification and Economic Inequality around the World: The End of Exploitation and Exclusion
Academic and policy circles are increasingly preoccupied with understanding the patterns of global inequality, its causes, consequences, and potential remedies. It is generally agreed that, while between-country inequality remains significant, it has been decreasing in recent years. Within-country inequality, on the other hand, is found to be on the rise in a large number of societies, in both economically developed and developing ones (Bourguign…
